Roughly 5-10 times a day for no reason at all my connection will just freeze and will be down from anywhere between a minute to 5 minutes. I have a tech coming here on Tuesday. I am just wondering if there's anything that I should ask him?
I have 2 ips, a linksys 5 port workgroup hub, and a com21 cable modem. Also, we use digitial cable (which I heard might cause problems sometimes with cable modems??). We've concluded with various simple tests that it's something to do with either the lines or the @home service for the reason that I get disconnected all the time. I was just curious since you guys know a lot of info. in this related field, so I was going to ask you for some advice first.
Thank you in advance for any feedback.
I think the problem could be the signal quality of the cable lines. How is your speed during the day.

Welcome to Speedguide.net. We'll try to help.
How many computers are you using?
Does it occur on all of them at the same time?
What do you do to get it going again?
Thanks,
Kip

xbit:
"How is your speed during the day."
When I'm connected, my speed is really really fast. (5,000kbs+)
Kip Patterson:
"How many computers are you using?"
I have 2 computers using 2 leased ip's.
"Does it occur on all of them at the same time?"
It seems to be more prone to disconnecting at night, but it disconnects at all times throughout the day as well.
"What do you do to get it going again?"
I generally just keep trying to get online from anywhere between 1-5 minutes til I regain connectivity. Then I just use it like normal til it all happens again :(
Thank guys for wanting to help me. :)

I'd start by removing the Netbeui protocol if you have it installed.
Next, I would remove file and printer sharing.
Under TCP/IP, the Netbios tab, uncheck "Iwant to run Netbios over TCP/IP" is not checked. Under the WINS configuration tab, make sure that "Disable WINS resolution" is checked.
Save and reboot. Does this stop the problem?

I'll try that and repost with the results. By the way, when I do get disconnected, the other PC is also disconnected. I have disconnected the other PC and directly connected this one to the cable modem for testing purposes and was still disconnected. But nonetheless, I will still setup my system like you suggested. Thanks for the input, and any other further input you might have for me. :) :)

Sounds Like the hub is out of sync. Take each computers rj45 cable and connect it to the modem one at a time. then shut down the modem and wait 5 mins for each computer. Sometimes this will help. I use to use the same hub. when this happen I would do this and then both computers would lock in their Ips. Then all you have to do is put the rj45 cable back in the hub. Hope this helps you out. GoodLuck! Another trick just power down the modem for 5 mins sometimes this works to. Hope this helps you out.;)

Well, the technician came today. He said that within these past few weeks and the hot weather that they've brought (90s w/ at least 60-70% humidity usually) that is causing something with the upload stream of the fiberoptics to temporarily (the 1-5 minute delay) to go down. He said that they're trying their best methods to provide the best support that they can but it's because of the heat and that they really can't do anything about it.
Is that possible? Have any of you heard of that? What do you think they'll be able to do to fix it?? It's annoying everytime I get disconnected anymore because it's happened so much and at important times that I just feel like kicking my cable modem across the road. Heh. Really though, I wouldn't do that. But any ideas you gurus?? :) Thank you. :D
It's most deffinately possible.
If they have crappy gear in un aircondition service centers and in direct sunlight, I'd say it could be very likely. Especially if the signal goes down during the hottest part of the day or around 5pm if the box is getting full sunlight at that time.
We had a system that would lose TV everyday at 5pm in the summer, right when the box was in full sun.
I could fix it for about 30 minutes by removing the RF connector from the TV and using a key or paperclip short the center copper to ground. I'd see a big blue spark which discharged the capacitance load on the cabe and everything would go back to normal.
\Now I say this was for our TV signal, but if the TV signal is thrashed by a build up of voltage and capacitance, it could happen to the digital Cable modem signal as well.
Try the short out trick and connect back to the modem.
If it works, do it for a few days to keep testing.
When the cable guy shows up when its not working and he accidently shorts it out and it seems to be fixed, then he will say something like, you got a problem here bub, but its working now.
That happened to us. You want to know how we fixed it finally ????
