Um... Hi. I'm the new kid in town, or something. Cheers. :)

OK, here's the deal: I had the cable guy here yesterday, got my network card and cable modem installed... But it won't work. The guy who installed it is a dolt who calls it a "browser issue", but I'm unable to connect to the net with any program, not just my browser(s). He spent a few hours doing stuff I could have tried myself, we got nowhere... I get this error message whenever i open a program that tries to connect to the net:

Application Error
Exception ESockError in module FDLCPCLWW.EXE at 00787C1.
100038: Socket Operation on non-socket.

The line itself is up and running, i went to dos and pinged a server at 4 - 8 ms. I'm guessing this is some kind of Winblows issue, but I don't know much about this particular area of computer technology

By the way, I get the same thing when I try my dial-up connection. My comp dials the number and connects to the server, but I can't get anything done. Damn cable guy screwd up my comp :(

I'd appreciate any help you could give me. The cable guy said I should reinstall Win 98, but I trust him about as far as I can throw him... He also said he'd check out some possibilities and be back today, but that was a bald-faced lie.

Incidentally, I'm on a K6-2 333MHz with 256MB RAM.

I really hope someone here can help me out, I want to fix this as soon as possible... Cable guy probably won't show up before Monday. Incidentally, this site seems quite excellent. I've bookmarked it, and will be visiting more often if I get my cable modem running ;) Thanks in advance. *hope hope* Later,

- Kar

In case you were wondering, I'm on another computer now :p
My dad's P266 with 32MB RAM :-/

Not that I have a lot of experience in this area, but you did get a CD or disk with the drivers for the NIC? If not, they are probably on the Win98 CD. From what I’ve seen, you load the software first for the NIC. Shut down the computer and install the NIC. Power up the computer and go to network properties to identify the NIC you have.

I put in one of my NICs before installing the software... and did have a few problems. Someone smart will be along soon so hang in there…

Welcome to SG!!!!

Actually, the cable guy installed the drivers from a CD (after plugging in the card, BTW) and took the CD with him when he left :-/

Hi Norm. Thanks!

OK, I'll give Norm's suggestion a try now. If it works, I'll let ya know. If it doesn't work, I'll probably be off to bed right away... ( It's 4:25 in the morning here ) With you guys to help me, I hope to have this fixed in no time. Thanks for the fast replies, I hope this works out. Believe me when I say that if it doesn't work, you'll still hear from me... Cuz I'll be bitching and whining :p

Hehe, thanks... I'll try not to expect too many miracles. :)
Renaming the file didn't help, BTW. I still can't get on the net, but at least I didn't have to see that error message all the time. I just got one message on Windows startup cuz it couldn't find the file.

Incidentally, the file was located in my C:\Windows folder.
I don't know much about this stuff, but it seems like Win98 uses that .exe-file to open a socket for any Windows application that could conceivably connect to a network. I get the error message during local file searches, Windows Explorer, system>network settings... Not just Internet programs.

Note that I have an old Win98, BTW. I got hold of a Win98 SE CD yesterday, but I'm somewhat hesitant to do a full format and reinstall yet... But at least I got my new CD-writer up and running yesterday, so I can make easy backups of all the stuff I wanna keep from that particular hard drive. At least my 12x 8x 32x CD-RW helps ease my mood a little bit :p

Anyway, if there's any information I've forgotten about my problem, don't hesitate to ask. I'll be checking this forum regularly, especially since I'd rather get my cable up and running as soon as possible than be confined to my dad's old wreck...

Cheers, catch you later.

True, true... but the "tech" in question seemed to be more of a cable guy than a computer wiz, if you catch my drift. He didn't seem to have much of a clue what he was doing after setting up the cable itself and plugging in the card. I mean, he calls it a "browser problem"... I suppose he got that idea from the fact that Internet Exploiter was the first program to give him the error message :p Anywayz, cheers now.

Well, I guess I'll try to do a Win98SE install after formatting.
The CD I have is a full install, so I'll have to format.
I've tried removing dial-up connections, modem, everything, and all the settings are as they should be.

As I said, I have a burner, so I can easily backup to CD, but I can just as well put them on my second hard drive. My C: boot drive is the tiny 3,2GB disk that came with the comp, i added a 20,5GB a while back.

I thought about removing the network card from device manager, as Win98 probably has some standard drivers that will work with the card. Cable guy took the driver CD with him, so... But I doubt that'll do much good, I might as well install Win98SE. There's not much important stuff on C: anyway, the only thing that bugs me is having to download and install all those little things you never think about that are floating around on your comp, like DirectX and so on... Of course, I'll be happy to do it once my cable is up and running ;)

Incidentally, the network card is a
Allied Telesyn AT-2500 TX (with Magic Packet) PCI Ethernet Adapter
And the cable modem is a
Toshiba PCX 1100

BTW, I just searched my dad's comp for the fdlpclww.exe file...
It's not there. Hmm, and I see he has Win98 SE. He uses the exact same dial-up connection as me, so the problem .exe-file is probably indeed some relic from earlier Win98. Thanks for pointing out that the file wasn't on your system, it got me checking :) Now, I know what to do with my time tonight :p

Thanks so far, catch you later.

OK, Win98 SE installed nicely, but now I just need to find a working driver for the network card... I'm currently downloading from Allied Telesyn's homepage, so I hope to be up and running in a few minutes! *HOPE HOPE* If it works out, I'll post it here so we can end this cursed trouble thread at last! ;)

Incidentally, what's wrong with IE5.5? Just wondering.

I believe my new sig says it all. Finally got it working, no thanks to the cable turds. Now I need to find something to use my connection on :p Cheers.
