View Full Version : Anyone else see this with different routers??
I had a linksys router and when I connected to the zone to play mech4 I connected to the main server, selected a game(server) joined and played.
Well I picked up a Netgear RT314 and when I get into the main server I select the game(server) I want to join and nothing.
It just sits for a while and then says could not establish connection.
Whats the difference in these 2 routers?
Does the Netgear have something locked down that I have to set before I can connect to the other servers.
thanks for any and all info or a site that might deal with this kind of thing. Just surprised me that one works and the other doesn't.
They are both using the latest bios, linky 1.39, netgear 3.24( I think there is a 3.25 but not sure if its beta or final) and both were set to factory default settings.
thanks again

I worked with alot of routers. That NetGear router doesn't allow you to configure ports it is due to come out with a firmware this month or the next that will allow for this. Even then it will configure (open/close) ports via telnet using commands, which is difficult and tedious. I have a Barricade from SMC and it is simple to config and it works with everything, not to mention fast and secure. Hope this helps...

The NetGear has and still does allow you to forward ports. The later firmware allows you do to do it through the web admin interface, but even back when they first came out, you could do it through Telnet and Hyperterminal.
Sparks, I play FPS games online which don't require port forwarding, does The Zone require ports to be open? On the Linksys, did you have any ports forwarded to play MW4? If not, I'm at a loss on why the NetGear isn't working. It's a rock solid router, one of the most stable and fastest routers I've worked on that costs under 300 bucks.
Try to remember if you did anything other than default on the Linksys, and do the same to the NetGear. Perhaps try the latest firmware, they give a detailed PDF file on how to flash, it's not as easy as the Linksys, but just follow the well laid out directions.
What I could not understand was the linksys worked first time.
No setup (other than isp stuff) and I have not had any problems.
The Netgear, took it out of the box, hooked it up and connected with no problems, but could not connect to any games.
On the zone server. it list games that are hosted by others that you can join. As soon as I click join, the modem lights flash for a second then nothing.(on the linksys it just takes off to the chosen server and you are in)
I did nothing on the linksys, but the netgear won't do anything.
Same everything but the router. MAN I want my $9.50 back LOL

I bought an RT314 a few months back and it ran MechWarrior4 just fine. In fact the linksys is known to cause page fault errors in MW4 if you try to host a game! BUT..... I just downloaded and installed firmware version 3.25 to the RT314! It now allows port range mapping (as well as allowing more admin functions in the browser mode). But in doing so, it removed the ability to just log on and run MW4. With the new firmware version and from what you are saying, with firmware 3.24 also, you must log into the manger's area and list a default IP address. This should be the IP of the computer you play MW4 on. The game will work just fine if you do that.
Krusher I assume you mean the computer I am playing on...like 192.168.1.100 behind the router and this will allow me to play?
thank you big time, I guess this is something that linksys has as a default in their software but Netgear has you put it in?
I only have one thing that makes me real mad. It won't be till Saturday that I will be able to try this...MAN I HATE WORK LOL
thanks again

Yes, your assumption is right! You just put that computer's LAN IP (the 192.168.x.x) in as the default IP for the router. You can do it through Telnet or through the browser if your firmware supports it. You might also consider downloading and installing the latest firmware version (3.25) for your router. I previously had V3.22 and the latest version was easy to install by following their instructions! Happy Gaming - WS_Krusher http://ws.4dw.com

It appears that you put the IP in th ewrong spot. If you have the latest firmware, version 3.25, you can input the default IP via the browser (where you type in 192.168.0.1 in the address area of your browser) - after typing in the pin and password you'll see the menu on the left - click on Advanced and then click on Ports - once you're in the ports section you'll see an area labelled "default" and it'll have an IP of 0.0.0.0. Just overtype that with the LAN IP of your gaming computer (the 192.168.X.X) and click on apply. You should now be able to play your games with no problems. :p

Well that seemed to work...thx....one more question....does that stop my firewall from being effective?....Is it opening all my porst or anything?
Thanks for your help!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

It doesn't "open" all your ports but it does defeat most of the NAT firewall features. What it does is, instead of just dropping IP packets that were unsolicited, it will now forward those packets to your default computer. (Some router companies call this a DMZ computer or de-militarized zone.) You should protect that "default" or "dmz" computer by running an actual fire wall like zone alarm on it. I always have zone alarm running using the medium security setting when I play online games and the games play just fine! Good luck and happy gaming! :D

...if i can do anything for u let me know....
...ya know like borrowing my wife or anything like that!:D
The one thing ive learned through helping other people network and networking a lanparty is that netgear sucks. Ive been throught about 3 netgear hubs and 2 nic cards until i finally learned that netgear is bull****. I recommend Linksys, which always works plug-and-play.

While Linksys has a very good name, it causes lots of errors in Mechwarrior4. You cannot host a game in MW4 and use a Linksys router - period! Everyone who tries to play in your game will get lots of page read errors and they end up getting thrown off of your server. So if you're going to play MW4, DON'T use Linksys. As far as reliability, the Netgear RT314 has been a very good router for me and if you read the reviews, its throuput is faster than the Linksys. Speed is life to gamers! These reasons are why I chose the Netgear.
