View Full Version : Cable Modem Standby Switch
I noticed that the SB4100 cable modem has a stanby switch on the front that lets you disconnect your computer from the internet while leaving the modem connected. Is ther any way to make a switch like that yourself? It is a nice security feature but not all modems have it.
That's what I was afraid of..... thanks for the reply.

if you are really interested in disconnecting the pc while keeping the modem connected, but yourself a cheep hub and a 2nd cat 5 cable and place it in between the modem and the pc. then jsut disconnect either of the cat 5 cables from the hub when you wish to take the computer offline.
You can disconnect the cable with everything on and it will not hurt anything? I have always been paranoid about that kind of stuff. Will it connect back up when you plug it back in? I am kind of new with networking so there is still quite a bit I need to learn.
One last question. Can you buy a switchbox for cat5? I would assume you can but I hate to asume things. :) That would be better so I don't have unconnected cables laying around. I think I am going to like this forum. I will learn a lot for you guys.
you really don't need to turn off your cable modem. If your'e computer is off no one will be able to hack you. If your computer is on just get a firewall like tiny or zonalrm and you good to go.:)
