I am a bell baby :)
Ok I have swbell DSL and with my old Alcatel modem I was getting 160K sustained dl. Well it died yesterday and they gave me a new modem. A speedstream.
Now I get 150K dl.
I asked to be given a new alcatel but they said they were no longer available. I said I would go buy one. NOPE we changed some wires at the central office, it won't work anymore.

Is the difference I am seeing the modem? There new wiring or ??

thanks for any and all info.

I think that modems do make a diffrance but other stuff does too.

Crack the hood off your old Efficient Speedstream and you'll find the Alcatel Dynamite chipset underneath.....so probably pretty much the same. I know know what the RAM difference is though...

There may be a different line code used on your ADSL connection. The two dominant ones are DMT and CAP. DMT is the world standard, but of course in america they still use CAP in some areas. Most equipment at the Central Office can do both DMT and CAP, yet modems typically only do one or the other. Your modem may have been switched between these two. You'll find alot of modems use an Alcatel chipset, as mentioned above anyway.

What is the exact model of both of the modems ?

The Alcatel was a 1000. old flat model.
The new speedstream 5260...with a big sticker that says
REV.7

I ran the sguide_tweak_98 reg hack and I have also set the
defaultRcvWindow to 256960.

These seemed to help a little. I am getting about 154KB now.
well its only 4k better but every little bit helps :)
I tried the cablenut program and was surprised that it didnot have
anything for non PPOE dsl settings.

That's the same Speedstream I have. Very popular around where I am, the local phone co uses them in their home install kits, up til lately when they switched to, uhm, something like Westel. Big white flat modem now with a hump in the middle.

I always wanted to find a comparison test between DSL modems and see the differences, however slight. I'm sure it may not be accurate though, as ISP's differ in their equipment.
