Okay folks - here's a tough one (at least for me).
Has anyone come accross either of these utilities that will let you:
1) scan a directory and place the information into some type of database (no matter what is in the directory -> pics, movie clips, text, folders, ect)
2) create a html video clip gallery (much like a thumbnail picture gallery creator)
Anyone - please let me know if either of these exist. I can't be the only one in the world that has need for these 2 types of of utilities!!
Im not quite clear about what you want with either of these...
What do you mean a video clip gallery???
And what would you want a database for?

.....
The database is for searching and displaying on a web page - lets say you have a 1000 items in a directory (on a windows 2000 box). You can do a dir2html and get a html page so people can look through the contents of the directory. But with a 1000 items - that can get very tiresome. If I can put that info into a database - I can build a search for the web page that lets people look for specific items in that directory.
Video clip gallery - just like something that is produced by pic2html - you look at a page with a bunch of thumbnails - click on the thumbnail and it opens to an enlarged version of the thumb. I would like to do the same thing, but with video clips. I would like to find a program that is automatic and simple like pic2html.
Sorry for the lack of description.
try seraching here

I see.. well first off for databses you would want to know MS Access (good luck) but you could just name your files with a small discription and then allow directory browsing so people can see everything in a folder.
You could aslo get a perl program that will search your site as well.

As for movies wouldnt it be a very large page if you had a bunch of small clips of dif movie splaying at once? why not just put thumb nails of the movie so people can get a rough idea of what it is about.

I'm gonna make an assumption here and assume you have never looked at a photo gallery web site.
Let me put it this way -
we'll assume that
1) I am using a windows 2000 box
2) I have a directory with 1000 items (movie clips)
Would you want to look at each clip and then give a description?
I know the concept of making a thumb of each clip is a great idea - but - would you want to make a thumb of a 1000 movies 1 at a time? I don't want to do that!!!
With the photo gallery software - you can point to a directory with pictures in it and it will build web pages with thumbs based on the pics. You decide how many thumbs to be shown on a given page. There is no need to have one huge page of thumbs - it can be broken up into many, many pages of say 25 per page or what ever. That is basically what I am looking for - but for movie clips instead of pictures.
For the reason of using a database :
would you like to scroll through lists of files looking for the file you want? Yes I know you can just do a find - but isn't it simpler to put in what things I desire and have the site pop the results up instead of having to wade through a directory looking for the info?
In my opion that is just so much easier.

I know this isnt what you want, however that can be done as a hotline server or an ftp server.
