RT314 and setting up G6 ftp server

Can anyone out there help me set up my ftp server. I have an rt314 netgear router and want to run G6 ftp server. It won't let people connect to the server at all. I have read the online page about it, and they make it sound real simple, but it never seems to work. Can someone out there walk me through this?

need to get a few things from ya:

1) what is your connection
2) does your provider allow ftp servers to be set up
3) is the the standard ftp port open or blocked
4) have you set up a port forward in the the router
or
4) is the system in th dmz

do i need to open the standard port 21 if my ftp listens on a different port?
