If you can help me out i would really appreciate it.

My original system was a 200mhz machine with 2 nics in it as a server for my cable modem. I used avirt SoHo for my sharing software. it worked great for a year or so. i could access any PC no problem on the LAN

I then installed Bear Share and a couple other peer to peer programs and everything slowed down. my internet speed was down to 5k and i no longer could network to the other machines. however all the other machines could still see each other.

I dumped the hard drive and reienstalled windows several times (win98) still the same problem

I tried to put that hard drive into a new machine with new nics thinking it was hard ware, same results. the machines cannot find each other. if i try to release the ip in winipcfg, it crashes

I tried swapping pci slots and nics, no help.

So i went and picked up a Netgear router for use with my netgear hub.

I have perfect internet now on all machines

but the problematic machine cannot see any of the others in network neighborhood. i let it sit once and after a half hour it eventually found the other machine. but i havent been able to do that since

as of now the problematic machine can ping the router or any other machine on the lan, but none are visable in network neighborhood and none can be found via find computer except itself.

all the other machines can share with others and see each other on the network. they all get internet, but none of them can ping the problematic machine. they all say timed out.

i have dumped the stack and nothing, tried different cables and nothing, tried different slots on the hub and nothing. Tried a new hub, nothing

all i have is tcp/ip as a protocol with dynamic ips

the problematic machine is 198.162.0.3
the problematic machine has no trouble getting onto the net, infact im using it now.

they are all in workgroup "work"

any help????

Install Netbeui and that should help out. Install it on all of your machines.

Check and see what ports your p2p software use. Could be that they are somehow in conflict (with each other or MS networking).
I know it's a stretch, but if the only that changed was the addition of these apps, then that has got to be the cause.

Haven't used bearshare - my coworker is convinced that it uses spyware....

Luck,

Skye
