View Full Version : linky router = no online banking?
Although I can access all other secure sites, my online banking won't work while I'm connected through the router. Plugged directly into the cable modem, everything's fine. Has anyone had issues like this?

It would be odd but it sounds like you may have to forward some ports to your pc through the router. Look at the help on your banks web site to see if they mention anything llike this.
I wouldn't think you would need certain ports forwarded except that you say you can aaccess it just fine when connected directly to the cable modem.
Good luck

I had to get a specialized router to tele-commute as the NAT that is performed by the Linksys prevented our VPN authentication service. My corporate helpdesk said that the 'method' that linksys uses is inferior. As it is now, I use that router for my laptop and the laptop maintains the public ip (the router prevents external connections, though).
I don't believe that you can have both public and private ip addresses behind a linky but I am not sure.
Have fun,

the only way to have a public IP behind the Linky is to put that machine in the DMZ. By doing that, you have no firewall so you need to run ZA or something similar. I have a linky 4 port and I can access my onine bank just fine along with credit cards. Have you looked at your internet settings in your browser. Make sure you have a 128-bit encrypted browser and you are enabling the SSL 2.0 and 3.0 options. Secured connections to the internet use this. But you said with out the router it works fine. hmmm.
Thanks for the info. I tried the DMZ on this machine... no go. I'll try port forwarding next, when I find out which ports they're using. Definately not the browser, which is what their admittedly inept cs agent claims. It happens on all browsers and both computers behind the router.

As mentioned above, most online banking wants https or 128-bit encryption available for itself to use.
I am currently using Money 2000 with my bank (and IE sometimes as well) through a Linksys BEFSR41 with no problems at all.
I would really check your software first, and make sure you have any "128-bit encryption" updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com as well.

Well now it works. Two variables. The Bank's Website has a different format, maybe they made server changes as well. I downloaded Microsoft's latest critical updates. I'd still like to know why the banking always worked when I didn't use the router. Hmmmm... Thanks for all the help.
