Hello everyone. I seem to have run into a little problem getting my LAN to work. Im trying to set up two PCs to share my cable modem. I have two Linksys Ethernet cards in my server, and a Netgear Ethernet card in the client. My cable modem hooks to one of the Linksys cards in the server. The second Linksys goes into port 1 (not the uplink port) on my 4 port hub. The Netgear ethernet card, in the client PC, is hooked up into port 2 on my hub. Now, I am able to access the internet using the server computer, and, I am able to view a folder, thats shared on the client PC, from the server. I am also able to view a folder, thats shared on the server PC, from the client. However, I am unable to access the internet from the client.

I am running Win 98, first edition, from both PC's. I am also running Wingate on both PCs, with Wingate, on the server, configured as server, and Wingate, on the client, configured as the client.

Heres how I have my internal network ethernet cards configured.

Server

Ip Address Tab
Specify IP address is checked
IP address 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

WINS Configuration Tab
Disable WINS Resolution is checked

Gateway Tab
No installed gateways

DNS Configuration Tab
Disable DNS is checked

Rest are defaults

Client

Ip Address Tab
Specify IP address is checked
IP address 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

WINS Configuration Tab
Disable WINS Resolution is checked

Gateway Tab
Installed Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS Configuration Tab
Disable DNS is checked

Rest are defaults

I had thought that the internal ethernet card was supposed to be connected to the Uplink port on the hub, but when I did that, I was unable to access the network from either PC. Anyone have any ideas of whats going on here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you ping out from the 2nd pc? or try accessing a web site by IP instead of the www name. If you can then it is dns problem.

Nah, I havent tried to ping anything using IPs. Anyone know the IP address of a reliable site like Microsoft or Yahoo or something like that so I can try it? Thanks alot for any assistance.

Many people have problems with Wingate. I suggest you buy a router or atleast use Inernet Connection Sharing in Win98 its free and easy to setup.

OK, Ill try that this evening. If my two computers can talk to each other, does that mean that they are both hooked up correctly to the hub? I mean, does the internal network ethernet card on the server need to be hooked up to the uplink port on the hub? Right now it isnt....and my 2 PC's can view shared folders on the other PC.

I've run into this. It was caused by interrupt sharing, and I fixed it by removing the two serial ports in the bios, freeing up those interrupts.

That installation involved a modem, may not be the same thing here.

You could also try putting in a DNS server ip on your client NIC, you can use either the IP (192.168.0.1) of your server or run winipcfg on your server and get the DNS that it's using then enter that number in the DNS tab and hit ADD on your client machine and enable DNS. This may be necessary if you are manually assigning IP's.
