View Full Version : Rwin 64240
Why would you run an RWIN above 64240 -like 513920-our some other Big Rwin- I get faster speeds with 64240
I would just like to Know Why????
Thanks

Because not everyone does get faster speeds :) Everyone's computer and connection are different, you gotta find what works for you ;)
yea - a friend of mine just got a satellite dish for net <lives WAY out in the country>. his rwin is 8970 and he downloads at 300 - 350 kb/s. that kinda tells me that rwin doesn't have much to do with speed.

OK I'm changing mine to 64240 and see what happens. My RcvWindow was set at 256960.

RWIN has nothing to do with speed? Ha! Set your RWIN to 1 and I guarantee that you will surf worse than a disabled version of 14.4k. Just because changing the setting of an RWIN didn't help you doesn't mean that it's not going to help anyone else.

Results of Speed test with RWin of 256960:
Test Running........
**Speed 1254(Down)n/a**
(At Least 25 times faster than 56K modem)
Finish.
Results of speed test with RWin of 64240:
Test Running........
**Speed 1061 (Down)n/a**
(At Least 21 times faster than 56K modem)
Finish.
You be the judge
those lower rwins are for isdn, wireless, and low speed dsl lines
SannieRose, please leave your system specs and we will see if we can find RWIN to make you faster:) :)
ok - i retract my statement. rwin has nothing to do with speed for me. i D/L at same speed with rwin at default as with it set to 1,000,000 or anywhere in between. i was kinda talking about my system in comparison with my buddy's - should have been more specific - :o

I know where this so call low Rwin discussion comes from. And in one way he's right. But let get down to the nitty gritty of it.
Rwin = recieve window.
Meaning it regulates what YOUR pc recieves.
This is the reasons for the various numbers for Rwins
Some people have very large and fast harddrives, nic cards CPU processors .. blah .. blah .. blah.
Think of it as a Big engine in a car. If you bought a car from the showroom it would be set to the factory setting.
Years ago you use to be able to turn the screws on the carburator to get a faster higher rpm out of your motor and therefore a faster car.
But if you turned that screw to high you would flood the carburator and choke the motor.
If you turned the screw too low it would slow you down so much you would have to push the car to get it going.
Now this same Ideal works when you "tweak" your PC.
When you change the various setting in your registery you are in affect changing your PC from a stock to a racing PC.
One of the aurguments for the 64240 Rwin is that it shows it in the Speedguide tester.
Did it ever occur that the speedguide Tester is set to the setting set forth by Speedguide?
And that Each time you test it it goes to the same link?
Now I'm not saying the Speedguide Tester is no any good, rather it is an "TESTER"
The real test comes from what YOU can tell while downloading and browsing on the Internet.
When I started all this tweaking.. I was barely breaking 56k speeds.
After some tweaking I with the help of Lobo and Dannjr was able to get my speeds up to around 200KB-250KB
Then when Dannjr and JonG helped me with the RamDrive my overall performance increase even more.
I now test at these speeds:
** Speed 1430(down)/na **
(At least 28 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.
** Speed 1417(down)/na **
(At least 28 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.
Remember... I was barely breaking 56k modem speed when I started.
So you be the judge... Me? I believe in higher RWIN... not to high but the best for MY PC.. which is 256960
well said - i understand. it just kinda tripped me out when he showed me that he was downloading over 300kb/s with rwin of 8790 or 8970 or something like that.

K! Here's my specs:
PIII 800Mhz, 256 PC133 RAM, Win 98SE, Speedguide web patch, vtcp.386 patch, 50Mb RAMdrive
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TCP options string = 020405b40103030001010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 47 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

thats a different network architecture and the MTU and MSS are probably lower also...sattelite networks have higher latency issues so they knock the MTU' and MSS down for better throughput. So this argument is like comparing apples to oranges. Not knocking you at all as you probably didn't know that but that is why....his pings are probably 240ms. So his MTU is probably in the neighborhood of 576...MSS probably 536...I'm not too sure with the header info on sattelite systems. With the high pings, he needs to avoid data and packet fragmentation.
But he is still on a broadband network and his throughput shows that but that network is different from land based ones.
I hope your friend isn't a gamer! High pings = death!!!!!:)
SannieRose. Try RWIN's of 513920, 522680, 524176, 531440 :) :) :)

SannieRose... how does it look now?

Hi MadDoctor :p I've been testing the RWIN's Lobo gave me and all my speed tests look this:
Text Block Size 500 KB
Download Time 2910 ms
Receive Buffer 531440 bytes
Transmission Speed 1375 Kb/s :(
Not good, huh? My current RWIN is set at 531440.
Help!
Could be you have a patch in set up with settings for a small RWIN, might try our patch with that RWIN:) :)
Or follow directions on help page below in sig:D :D :D

Hi Lobo, Only patches I have in are Speedguides'
MS Vtcp.386 fix for Windows 98 and
sguide_tweak_98_ME.
I also created a 50Mb RAMdrive per Norm's instructions. I edited my registry using Cablenut's settings and I have scoured your Help page long before I began posting here. ;)
I am happy with my internet speed but I would like my DL's to go a little faster. :p
Try 530710, it's not a multiple but I used it before:)

Thanx, Norm :D I'll keep those thoughts in mind. I set my RWIN at 530710 and I'm testing it. But I'm pretty happy with my overall performance ;)
