I just installed Tinysoftwares Winroute Lite but when I start the client computer a message comes up and says:
WinRoute Lite engine could not be
VarStartServer() failed, configuration module could be started
Any ideas why? It's the same with the PRO version

What OS are you running? Earlier version of WinRoute only works with Windows 95, 98, and ME, not NT or 2000. Here's an updated Pro version..
ftp://ftp.omarnyc.com/public/software/winroute/wrp41enw2k.exe

The client is on winME and the server on win98 and it's the latest version (4,1) I'm using

No, it isn't. 4.1 is an earlier version that only supports 95 and 98. Your best bet is downloading the version I have, I included the link in the post above.

Hm, I tried your file but it's still the same problem...
Can it be any settings I've made somewhere that is spooking?

Have you uninstalled the version you have, rebooted, installed mine, then rebooted?

yep I uninstalled, rebooted, installed and then rebooted again

Hmm.. I would try uninstalling again, deleting the folder where it saves the program files in, typically C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINROUTE PRO, and then running the setup again.

Sorry still the same problem, I also tried to re-install Internet Explorer but nothing changed... :-(

Damn.. Very odd.. You're trying to do this on both PC's?

It works fine on the server, or at least that message doesn't come up at least

So then just use it with the server, you would only need one instance of a NAT server on your LAN anyhow.

Well I tried to re-install win98 and now the problem is gone but I can't still connect to the other computer. Do you mean that I only need the Winrouter on one computer? If so there must be something wrong with my settings cause it doesn't work neither.

One of the PC's running WinRoute will share the connection with the rest of your setup. In this case, you must select a private LAN IP range, like 10.10.10.0, and configure this on the workstation you're trying to share the Internet connection with. I would simply enable the DHCP server on WinRoute, and let your workstation pickup the IP info it needs. Go through the WinRoute help, it'll tell you how to enable the DHCP feature.

Ok, but I've realized that I can't ping my other computer, it just says: request timed out. How do I fix that??
MosDef112

It's timing out because there is probably no IP address set, or there are IP addresses that are not contiguous or constant, like 10.11.12.2 and 10.10.10.1. If you don't have a router that allows these two ranges to talk to each other, they will never ping each other.

Ok the IP:s are 192.168.1.1 and the other computer have 192.168.1.2
When I click the network on the desktop I can't see the other computers, if I search for them I can see them and connect. Any idea why?

Check the workgroup name. If both PC's have different workgroups, agree on a name, and change them both to it.

I made it simple and set the workgroup name to "1" on both still it doesn't work

It would be better if you make the workgroup an alphanumerical value. Also, since you just finished changing it, you must allow the master browser up to 15 minutes to refresh it's computer list. Adding the NetBEUI protocol will get the PC's to show faster if you wish to add it.

Ok now they atleast find each other in the network but the ping still times out

Pings to each other or to the net?

To each other

Do you have a default gateway specified? If you don't, then make the PC attached to your Internet connection the default gateway, or for example make the PC attached to your CPE 10.10.10.1, with no gateway, and make the workstation 10.10.10.2, with gateway 10.10.10.1.

I've set the server computer as gateway (192.168.1.1) it's also the DNS-server. Just to see so I've got this right: On the server I'm supposed to have the WinRoute engine up and at the client to. Then I fill in the servers IP on the client as host. If this is right then I get an error message which says that I can't connect

No, you only install WinRoute on the server PC.

Do I only have to have the winroute engine up on the server or must the administration also be up?? I still can't connect to the other computer

YES! finally it works. I tried sygate home network and niw it works! The only small change I did was to set my IP to 192.168.0._ instead of 192.168.1._ otherwise it's the same settings strange enough
