View Full Version : timeouts flashget
I am using satellite internet access with a company called Starspeeder in Europe.
This works by using modem for uplinking using an ISP and for downlinking the signal comes via satellite to our satellite dish then via a dvb card to our pc.
To achieve this we have to load Microsoft virtual private network connection to a server in Luxembourg.
The vpn connection then receives the data.
When we download using Flashget we get a constant data flow and usually at the full permitted speed divided by the number of download threads.
When we download or browse using our browser this does not happen. This problem has been identified to repeated timeouts.
It does not matter which version of windows this happens.
We have all tried the various speed tweaks but none of them hold onto the download in the way Flashget does.
Flashget must somehow override the windows timeout setting if there are any.
Can you think of any registry tweaks that will make explorer avoid the timeouts in the way Flashget does. Can you explain how Flashget does this?
Extract from the starspeeder (internet translation from German)admin explaining problem:
"The problem of interruptions during file downloads has been identified .
Result : The Internet carrier ( C&W ) has problems with IP package lost's on some of his route's . Is the package lost more than 12 % , the download interruptions are getting worse and worse because our system verifies the packet and tries to recover them respective tries to get them one
more time .If this happens , the traffic volume doubles every 30 sec. !!!!
This naturally may be a disadvantage in a Unicast system like we have , but has the reason to guarantee high package quality to the enduser's .
Thank you.
Norman Mazure.

as you posted.. Packet lost.. that is a provider problem and a serious one at that.
You really should ride their case and make them come up with an answer.
Maybe someone else can help here.. but I doubt it.. but lets see if they do. :)
Yes bit even without this why does falsh get work better whats it do.

I was hoping someone with that kind of knowlege would respond by now.
But have you ran this test-->Connection Tester (http://forums.speedguide.net/cgi-bin/optd/optd.cgi?DATA_OFFSET=40&TCP_Options_string=020405b40103030201010402&IP_MTU_DISCOVER=1&WIN=64240&RWIN=256960&MSS=1460&SCALE=2&TTL=36&TSOPT=0&SACK_PERM=1&IP_TOS=28&IP=24.129.70.147×tamp=993478796)
It's what we use to determine proper setting for pc's.
Run it and do a copy and past here and make sure you leave out the IP address and let's see what it shows.
If no one respond's soon .. go over to the Broadbandnuts BB in my sig and post there. Dannjr is pretty good with this stuff.
TCP options string = 020401f20103030001010402
MTU = 538
MTU value is too small ! Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.
MSS = 498
Maximum useful data in each packet = 498, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU value.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 65535
Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
517920 (MSS x 130 * scale factor of 8)
258960 (MSS x 130 * scale factor of 4)
129480 (MSS x 130 * scale factor of 2)
64740 (MSS x 130)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = OFF
Time to live left = 47 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
BUT these are not my settings. The ip addess is the vpn server.
I have:
Default mss 1460
Defaultrcvwindow 65535
DefaultTTL64
EnableDNS0
Lanabase0
LMHost File c:\windows\imhost
LocalCopymadei
PMTUBalckHole Discovery0
PMTUdiscovery1
Sackopts1
Tcp13230pts1
In Parameters
MaxDup Acks 3
I have no settings now for maxmtu in net trans but had 1500 which I am not sure is good for vpn.
I tried all the tweaks but whatever tweak I used I still got full speed with flashget whatever the setting but half speed max wuith the browser. Why would flashget run with no problem it must override something.

In the test it said this;
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 65535
Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix.
If you are using Windows 95, 98 or 98SE you need a Microsoft update patch... this is why the patches you tried don't work.
Go here-->Speedguide patches (http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml) and scroll down to Microsoft Vtcp.386 Update . read the instructions and install the patch if it applies to you.
I don't know why that Flashget program works but there are some programs out there that supposely improve differance online things.
But I think you'll see an improvement and will be able to get the speedguide tweaks to work once you done the above.
If this is not one of those windows program. I can't help any further.
You may need to move over to the Software forum in order to find out more about Fashget.
Let me know! :)

Norman,
I did some researching on Flashget and it's what I thought it was.
It's a download accelerator software.
Those softwares insert in your system registery tweaks like what we do here for your TCP/IP settings.
I have found that once someone has Tweaked their TCP/IP they got rid of their accelerator.
But as I mentioned above, Your PC needs some serious tweaking.
So can you tell me your set up?
What I need to know is....
Are you using a router?
If so how many PC's and what Operating system are they using.
Also what size CPU.
We know you are using a satilite disk for service. that will be an interesting tweaking there.
If no one response from here soon.. I'm gonna hook you up with someone who is Great with this stuff.
So let me know. :)
At the moment I think it pointless trying this with you because of the packet loss we will not be able to test can you email me your address and when the servcie is up and running I will contact you I can start anew. I will set out fullexplanation as I knwo it of how system work and setting then also i can insert screen captures as we go along then we can post a starspeeder guide to the forum.

Norman,
I sent you my email address yesterday morning. I hope you got it.
Let me know! :)
Thanks yes I have posted the following article on the starspeeder forum. Will let you have all info shortly.
"I have made contact with the speed gurus behind speedguide net. They will look at our problem.
Obviously it is difficult to test anything now but I want to prepare an email to them with what we think are the correct settings and problems.
I want to cover win98 se only for now. Will ask re other systems later.
Please email me at Norman@hollycharm.screaming.net your views of correct tweaks for this service where you differ from the following, please also explain why you have the different setting and why the one I have you think is wrong:
A>
In Nettrans for each TC/IP connection.
MaxMTU 1500 (I have been told vpn will only accept 1460?)
In MSTCP
DefaultRcvWindow 256960 (if 1460 MaxMTU correct is this OK)
DefaultTTL 64
PMTUDiscovery 1
PMTUBlackHoleDetect 0
Tcp1323Opts 1
SackOpts 1
In Parameters
MaxDupAcks 3
In Software ...windows\current\version\internetsettings
MaxConnection...1_0server 32
MaxConnectionPerServer 16
B>
Are there any other registry tweaks you have done?
Please specify and explain?
