I first posted this in the General /dsl forum and was told this is where I need to be.
My issue is that I can not download any files, using any browser. This only started after install pac bell ppoe dsl service. I was using a analog modem before the dsl connect. The ppoe sftw. is EnterNet 300. I have read and changed the MTU to 1492 ppoe advanced setting show this but the test site returns MTU = 1486
I have installed the cable nut progam and applied the suide_tweek2kpppoe.reg. I have also assigned 4meg mem to the irq. I am at a dead end on figuring out why I can not dnld any data files. Any help at all for a fix? My system is a amd thunderbird, 256mb ram.

tcp/ip analyzer returns

TCP options string = 020405a60103030201010402

MTU = 1486
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

MSS = 1446
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1446, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 255552
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
508992 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
254496 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127248 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63624 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10222.08 kbps (1277.76 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4088.832 kbps (511.104 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 50 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

set MTU discovery = 1

set TCP123Opts = 1

hope it helps :)

Can't download any files? What happens when you attempt to download files? Try this.. While Internet Explorer is open, click Tools at the top and select Internet Options. In the options click Delete Files, after the files are deleted, click Settings right beside it. At the top where it says Search for Newer Versions of Stored Pages choose Never. At the bottom, set your cache from 8 to about 15MB. Clear your cache daily. Click ok to save changes. Now click the Connections tab. Click LAN Settings at the bottom and make sure that nothing is checked in there. If anything is checked then uncheck it and click Ok to save.

"If you are getting stalls when using your PC Before your new ADSL line has been activated, your new internal ADSL card could be attempting to talk to the network (which is not yet configured for you), and while it does this, your PC may freeze. The solution is to remove the drivers for the card and/or the card itself, until the ADSL line is activated by the Telco, then re-install from scratch.

If your PC is freezing regularly, and you are on PPPoE, your computer may be looking around for a DHCP server that does not exist. Check the following: (windows)

Open control panel

Open Network

Look for the first entry in the scroll box marked TCP/IP, that is associated with a hardware ethernet card (ignore dialup, AOL and VPN type bindings).

Select it and press properties

Select IP address from the tab

Is Obtain IP address automatically checked? if so, change that to Define IP address and enter 192.168.1.10, and 255.255.255.0, into IP address and subnet mask fields respectively
This assignment of a harmless local IP address to the TCP/IP settings bound (connected) to your network adaptor, will stop the in-built DHCP services from waking up every 10 minutes to look for a DHCP server so that it can "fill in the blanks". "

Hope this helps... good luck :)

your MTU value is being set by the ISP's PPPoE driver not Windows try this path in regedit.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet >
Servicis > Class > Net > 000X click on this folders to find the drive (PPPoE driver) it will be named in the "DriverDesc" value open this folder to 000X > Ndi > params > MaxFrameSize
modify the "Max" string value to "1492" and go back to the "000X" folder and modify the "MaxFrameSize" string value to "1492". This should set the MTU value for you.

Maybe I should have stated this early in my posting I am running win2k pro. When I said I can't dnld files I mean when in any browser if I attempt to dnld a file any data file the transmission of the file may or may not start to download. I am not talking about html. I have been having a friend dnld and email the cablenut and other files to me. Now I have looked in the registery for mtu discovery and can not find such a entry and tcp123opts is also not found?
As I had mention before I can dnld if I do a dial up.
Could the ppoe settings be confused with the dial up settings if this makes any sense?
Also is this right the mru and max frame size settings in the advanced tab for the ppoe adapter are both at 1492 is this correct? Also like I said I have the cablenut adjuster v4.02.0016 installed.

Load the pppoe_fast_2k in CableNut 4.02/ccs/pppoe. Click save to registry and click done. Then reboot your computer. Let us know if the tweaks helped or not. I'm sorry if I missed this, but have you tried netscape (Internet Browser) to download a file that you couldn't with Internet Explorer.. If you could download files with Netscape then download a newer version of IE, 5.01 SP1 is the best in my opinion... it's up to you. Well, I hope this helps. Good luck. :)

BigAmp my reg. does not have Net in the Class folder. EvilAjax I have had the ppoe_fast_2k settings loaded. The download failure happens no matter what browser I use, IE, NetScape or Opera. I can get a portion of a file if I use Download Accelerator but it will get to about 50% at tiems and also just quit. Tcp analyzer shows.

Ok don't know if I am making headway but I did reaplly the tweeks and now this is the result. But I still can NOT dnld any data files. Don't know if this is relevent but I do notice that on many web pages the globe in ie continues to rotate indicating that the page had not completed loading. but when I click the x the page does look complete.

Don't see how a reload of IE will help since the problem is seen in other browsers. As for downloading it again that is the problem I am trying to fix I can NOT download anything as it is now. I really don't want to reload the system if I can help it at at all. The problem does not exist when I dial up with the analog modem.

A little more info I am currently trying to ftp a file msdun. Since I have not yet installed it. But I notice in the connection box I can watch the tx and rx bars for kbps. While trying to ftp the file about every 4 seconds I see a burp of data on the rx side. BTW what is the msdun.exe going to do for me?

Well don't know if this will get resolved, but I did call my isp and run through all there questions. It was escllated 3 times and now I am waiting on a service tec to test the line from my house. As a last resort I did put a fresh load of 2k pro and with nothing else loaded but the nic driver and ppoe sftw. I still could not dnld any files.
