I am currently running Norton Personal Firewall 2001 and everytime I want to play CounterStrike I have to disable my firewall in order to get into any multiplayer games. If I set security to low I can get a list of internet games, but I am still unable to join any of them. Once I disable the firewall I'm good to go. Would anyone have any suggestions on how to keep my firewall up while playing? I've tried creating a rule for halflife.exe (and the commands to open CS) and it didn't work

You need to open the port for counterstrike. If memory serves me you need to open port 6537 or something similar to that number to allow access to half servers. ( the port number is shown in that connecting screen when you are waiting for the server to load up initalizing and connecting) I have not worked with norton personal firewall but you should be able to open specific ports for such issues. Check out your documentation for such configuration.

Thanks. I believe I can open specific ports. If not I'll find me a new firewall ;)

If its anything like my router, for CS you have to open/forward ports 27015-27020. The usual HL servers are usually ports 270xx. So just open those ports. It might also help to assign your client machine a specific number like 27005. I think that is default but you can add +clientport 27005 to your shortcut. If you use gametiger or gamespy, etc., you have to enter that in there with your launch settings. Might be more info than you needed.

Well, I set a rule to allow TCP and UDP, both incoming and outgoing, on ports 27000 to 27020 and still have the same problem.
If Norton won't let you set the configurations, then maybe try Tiny if you understand rule sets, if not, go to Zone Alarm personal or Pro edition, depending on your flavor.;)

Hehe.. more like depending on my wallet ;)
Correct me if I am wrong, but by rule sets you mean configuring access for ports and addresses? I may have to learn the difference between UDP, TCP/IP, and all my ports, but thats by no means impossible.
The default for CS is 27015 but it could be anything.
