what software would you recomend the new members of the security forum install on there computer to be 99% secure
we all know that the first thing would be to download an install a firewall...you basically have many options of what firewall to use
*zoneallarm...www.zonealarm.com.
*Tiny Person Firewall...www.cnet.com (in the search bar type Tiny Personal Firewall.
*Sygate Personal Firewall...www.sygate.com.>(this is the firewall i recomend.
ok now theres the 3 main firewalls
what would the members of speedguide.net say is next???
what other programs are out there that help secure a computer from hackers.>?

The only other things would be a hardware firewall, Anti-Virus Program, Anti-Trojan program and with all of these in place, I'd still be hesistant in saying that your 99% secure. If a hacker wants into your computer, which most likely, it will be to difficult for them to even bother with, they'll figure a way out. If your just a home user that doesn't store anything of any significance on your computer, I wouldn't worry about it extremely, however, if you do have files on the computer that are significant, then I'd add a hardware firewall to the arsenal.:)

Well a Hardware Firewall was already said but I want to say it again.

Also make sure that if you have a network that you have it set up correctly and that you dont have file and printer sharing bound to anything but the Network Protocol. Never bind it to the outgoing TCP/IP.

Some other Things you should definately have is an Anti-Virus program.

These are also good things to have

Trojan Scanner
Spyware Detecter

CHEERS~!.

Have you ever heard of OpenBSD (http://www.openbsd.org)? 3 years without a remote security hole in the default installation!!

Debian GNU/Linux (http://www.debian.org) is also a great "secure" OS. Its the Linux distribution thats more widely used by ISP's.

Some other programs/thoughts (or lack thereof):

PGP ("Pretty Good Privacy" ... more like "government-grade encryption"): http://www.pgp.com/
The latest Windows patches: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ or http://catchup.cnet.com/
The Hosts File (blocks sites that are known for spyware and other such servers, especially ad bars): http://accs-net.com/hosts/

...And everything else that people mentioned.
