even if i do backup my registry beforehand, is there anything that could go wrong? have there been any horror stories of tweaking cable modems gone terribly wrong? whats the worst thing that could happen? i dont want to screw up everything just so i can download a bit faster.....

also, will applying a cable modem tweak decrease my ping in online games, such as Counter Strike? or is it just strictly for downloading purposes?

thanks!

by the way, if it matters i have
Duron 700 mhz 192 mb RAM Windows ME

Well editing your registry without any knowledge of what you're doing can be disasterous. Nothing a format couldn't handle. The tweaks we suggests are tested by us and therefor can't harm your system. Now, if you do settings on your own, like choosing a 20 digit RWIN, then that can be fatal. Everything we recommend to our members are settings we've gone through already. So the answer to your question, no, our suggestions can't harm you. You might lose some speeds if a certain setting isn't good, nothing another setting couldn't cure. :) Welcome to speedguide.net.

Click on the TCP/IP analyzer in my signature. This will open another window and will analyze your current settings. You will then copy and paste your results here. Do NOT paste your IP Address. We'll see what we can do. BTW, have you done any other tweaks or is this your first time? By the looks of things, you're just starting. :)

okay thanks....so if i download patches from this site for my OS im safe? good.

2nd question....will this make my connection faster on online games? such as counterstrike, quake 3 etc.

nope never done any other tweaks, if you couldnt notice hehe
here are the results:

Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 17520
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 17520
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 700.8 kbps (87.6 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 280.32 kbps (35.04 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 112 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Go to the Speedguide.net speed patches in my signature and download the appropriate patch for your system and connection. To install, extract the file, then just right-click and choose "Install" from the Pull-down menu. You need to reboot for changes to take effect. Then come back and post your new TCP/IP results to see if the tweaks are in. And let us know if you've noticed any speed increase or not. Good luck :)

should i bother backing up my registry first?

and once again, do you know tweaks just help for straight downloading/uploading? or will it also help me get lower ping in online games?

EvilAjax

It will lower pings, download/upload speeds, all that good stuff :) and yes, backup.

damn im stupid....and what do you suggest to backup registry the easiest? and where could i find it...if thats too much to ask?

And for faster loading of web pages, download the SpeedGuide Web Patch from that same page. After installing, reboot for changes to take affect. We're only getting started :)

No, you're not stupid :) I'm not sure you know how to back up your registry. Okay, do this. Click start > Run, then type regedit. This will open up Registry Editor. In the top menu click Registry and select Export Registry. Type Before Tweaks and save it to a folder for safe keeping. To restore just do the same thing but instead choose Import Registry and choose the file and it will Merge. You will then need to reboot (if you're restoring).

there are two different tweaks i could download for ME
one says PPPoE and other is just generic
does this matter?

EvilAjax

download the generic one. PPPoE is for DSL users.
