View Full Version : can you NOT host FTP's on roadrunner?
i asked if there was an upload limit per month, they said no.
The cable company uses port scanners to check whether or not you are running a firewall. They also can look and see how much outgoing bandwidth you are using. Sure, you CAN host a server, but if they catch you, they will probably send you and e-mail then if you do it again, they will probably disconnect you.
i read my license agreement, and it says nothing about a firewall or a server. i have a fire wall and want a server.

"Subscriber further agrees not to connect the
cable modem to any computer other than the Computer(s) or to any server (or any computer running server applications that provide similar protocol services over
the Road Runner Service), including without limitation any servers for mail, HTTP, FTP, RTP, IRC, DHCP, or multi-user interactive forums (e.g. gaming)."
Your wording may vary, but it is there. Look in the subscriber agreement.

So RR users can't run firewalls?

You can run firewalls, that isn't a violation of the policy, however, if they see a large bandwidth usage coming out of your modem, expect a letter in the mail!

Kip,
Q1: My kids play games all the time on RR. Does your comment imply that they can't play games on RR or that they can't set up a game server?
Q2: If someone needed files on my PC are you saying I can't temporarily set up a FTP server so they can get the file using FTP and then shut the FTP server off?

Actually :
1) you can have a firewall - provided that you're not using it also as type of nat/proxy device which lets you connect multiple computers via 1 ip address - the cable company would like you to pay for the additional ip addresses - hey them cable company's want to squeeze as much juice from you as they can.
2) provided that certain bandwidth limits are never hit - you can pretty much run any type of non profit server (or profit - if bandwidth is low I imagine it will be a while before the cable company catches on if at all) with out any input from the cable providor. If you choose to set up shares and open them to the world - you maybe asking for more trouble then it's worth.
3) game server fall under the (if you call tech support) - Uhhhhh... did you say server? Uhh no because that's a server ... even though I have no clue what you are taking about - to - someone that really knows what's going on and is willing to talk with you to see if it's possible to set up a game server on you node. Best bet is to call and ask, you may even need to escalate to a 2nd tier or higher support.
In any event I would say call tech support and ask.

A1: Playing games on your RR connection is fine. Now about the game server, technically it is against their policy to run one, but if
it isn't on 24/7, they probably wouldn't catch you.
A2: Here again, technically no. Usually if you just use the server for a few minutes or a couple of hours they won't catch you.
What I think the cable company would do is if they saw a significant amount of bandwidth being used by you, they would run a port scan to check whether or not you have a server running.
Just my opinion. :p

I have a question, I was wondering what ports do they scan excatly. just the normal 21 ftp, 80 html, etc.. or do they do a full system port scan checking all ports. These gay rules can make you paranoid when you want to send your friends files by setting up and ftp just to trade a few things. i usually use a manually specified port like 200, 2010 or just something other then the normal ports.

People running games servers get away with it because they aren't on too much, and some ppl change the port the server uses at regular intervals to avoid detection..
My ISP cogeco@home scans different ports all day long about an hour apart, looking for servers, FTP ports open, and who knows what else.
Be safe not sorry, ask or pay. If caught, you will most likely be warned before you are diconnected forever. Heed the warning if you get one, they aren't very forgiving.
The thing that gets me is many programs like FrontPage, MS Word, ICQ, etc, act as servers, but don't seem to bother the ISP's.

Real quick one - I don't know where your cable connection is from, but for most better connections you will need to get a business account. Most cable providers have a pathetic lower speed business plans for an outrageous amount of money.

Ok I use to work for RoadRunner, They block port 21 , They do not allow servers to be ran. The only way is to buy a busniess Pack which is 80.00 a month. The common home user can not purchase this. It is wriiten right in their agreement you sign. If caught will be fined and lose your services. You can call them and check but I still think its the same as when I worked their. Port 21 is blocked from their end. I work for them for 6 years till I got hurt on the job. If you have a valid reason to run for a busniess. They will work with you this way. Other wise they do not allow it. If you want it for gameing. You use to be able to pay more for them to release it for this, But I think they stop this. I would check with them and see. GoodLuck!;) Oh yes check their disclaimer posted on their main page member services. Click on policy . the page will come up asking who is your provider and where are you located. Fill this in. Then when the home page comes up click member services a gain and then click policy again and it will give you the information about not running servers.;)

DO NOT host an ftp on roadrunner, i hosted one for a month, and then someone @ roadrunner finally caught me and suspended my account for a week. i didnt know any of this until about 5 days after they suspended me. then i got a letter after my suspension was over telling me that i was suspended for copyright infringement and if i was caught ever again hosting an fto, my account will be permanently suspended! they also told me over the phone that they will be keeping my account under survilence..so if you host a ftp w./ rr, good luck!

Lets see... I have had RR for roughly 3 years now and have hosted an FTP for most of that... I run about 10 gigs a day thru it on a slow day and have... knock on wood... never been disconnected in any way... of course they can see my throughput but cannot see my system in anyway. I sit behind 2 firewalls and specifically block my ISP's scans. They scan like clockwork to see what I have, but get only bricks in the face... I suggest that if you run a server, reguardless of content or ISP, u have some very good Firewalls and goto several different web sites that offer system scanning to check for weaknesses and open ports. This will help to verify that you have been effectively shielded. www.symantec.com and www.grc.com offer very good scans and tell you how to "fix-the-hole" in your armor. Furthermore; they do not publish the results... like some other sites do... which as anyone would know would be an open invitation to any would-be hacker. I could go on and on about different things you could do to further protect yourself from ISP hassles but, I will stop here. Know this... if you live in a state that RR does not offer "business" class cable they cannot disconnect you for excessive throughput, they have to prove that you are running an FTP! If they can't see it they can't prove it. Call your provider and see if they offer "business" class cable.. if they don't then toss up some firewalls and do some scans and your set to rock and roll. Just as a tid bit... if u reside in the state of Florida, your a lucky person. ;) Take care and good luck.
