Hey, I was wondering how dsl is Windows Xp? Has anyone noticed any increase or decrease in connection speeds? I have Win98SE and was thinking about upgrading to WinXp when it finally comes out.I wouldn't really have any other reason to upgrade since my system is pretty stable and works fine. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Alex

Well, my experience with it wasn't good. My MTU wouldn't change from 1400, and it was a pain in the ass. Do you have PPPoE or an Always On connection? I have PPPoE, so it may differ.

I have a Win 2K Pro platform and have no problems changing MTU's to whatever I want. It would seem to me that with PPPoE on an XP platform there ought to be a way to do it.

Well, XP comes with it's own built in PPPoE. It's sorta cool, it can dial without showing the process... The only thing is that I could not change the MTU! It stood at 1400 at all times. I did get RASPPPoE installed once, MTU went to 1492... but my speed dropped dramatically. I never got Enternet to work on it, and there's no way I was going to try crappoet (winpoet). I suggest that you some how test is first, because you don't want to get stuck with something you don't like. Lobo says it works great for his cable modem.. It's a good system, don't get me wrong.. Just too slow for me :( Later.

Thanks for the info, is there any site that I could obtain a copy of it from?...My friend is a beta tester for Microsoft and is getting some evaluation copies soon so maybe then will I be able to try it out.

I am using WinXP and have had nothing but trouble with my Internet connection since I upgraded, I still can't get to my online banking and other sites that I use daily, but others I can. I have a post about the main problem. See DTE post. And my ISP is taking the hands off approach which doen't help.

The first rule of PPPOE, is not to use PPPOE!!!
You use a Cable/DSL Router that takes care of PPPOE; as a result, from the point of view of the computer you have an Ethernet DSL. Under this condition, any OS that is Ethernet capable uses the DSL.
Every week you can find a Router on sale (Best Buy, CompUSA, or Circuit city etc.) they cost $60-$80.
I use DSL (Verizon) this way. The combination of XP + I.E provides smoother, and 15% faster DSL connection.

Is that a guaranteed 15% speed improvement? If so... I'm getting one right now.

<----using a router with PPPoe no problems at all (thank god)

Would someone please detail the addition of a router to my adaptor/modem ADSL system, it sounds so good.
Thanks

first off i will say i have never used XP actually i have never SEEN XP, but i do work with someone in the support field that beta test XP and has had a few problems with it and is not that impressed and he is not really a microsoft hater either and he is pretty big into beta testing.
with that said i would believe that the XP experience will suck!!!! for most users. i say this because i have the belief in if it ain't broke dont fixit.. at my job every day i get support calls from people that uPgRADED to wINDOWS mE:) :D YEA!!! they have no idea why they just spent 100 bucks to do so , but they did it!!
many of these people have no idea what a driver is for their hardware and are totally surprised:eek: Y???? they are having problems and have lost a lot of info on their computer:eek:
i cannot do it at work, but i want to scream at the person YYYYY??? did you just waste a hundred bucks?? what the hell is windows mE gonna do for you that you could not do with win98??
these are people that use their computer and their broadband connection to check email, chat, news groups, and MAYBE look at a few web pages or stocks what you upgrading for y are you not on dial up??
with that said even if you are an advanced user i still question using my time to test someone elses junk for them for nothing , and even worse so that that person you r working for free for can take the ALMOST ready product you tested for them and sping it on to a largely foolish public to upgrade with (IE screw their computer straight to hell and have to take a weekend to get it back to where it works much less all the data lost) to me this kinda sux , but hey im not the worlds richest man
what do i run i have WIN 98 not second edition, windows nt 4.0 it is old service pack 2 i have gotten to sv pack 6 now, windows 2000 server just got still learning, solaris 8 you can get it for free it is a bitch i cant get it going yet think it is a video card problem, and i am about to download free BSD direct network install.
opinion of each
win 98 great for 90 % of home users
win nt 4.0 some things are cool some sux old now go with something else
win2000 for most users pro would be fine i think 2000 pro and server kickass they actually find the driver on the cd without having to drill down to the exact file (most of the time) they run pretty smooth too definately a better buy than ME but requires a little knowledge easily learned to get the hang of it but, worth the time.
the others are a for fun
to answer the origional question you will almost surely see no noticeable differance in most aplications with going to XP the part of your post where you said you have no other reason to upgrade says it all i think.
lets face it upgrading an OS is a pain in the ass and is best avoided at all cost unless there are concrete benefits to do so
i think beta testing is cool , but to me there are better products to test than XP, or aOL versions ect. but to each their own better to me would be a linux OS , or really learn to admin 2000 server like i am trying , or learn to build a web page ect. .. JUST MY OPINION , but beta testing the aOL's and micosoft's of the worlds products wont get you as far as putting your computer skills to another area , but hey it is for ou to decide
thanks

I have a Win 2K Pro platform which connects through a switch with an uplink to a router. My router is a Cayman 3220-H which has a built in modem, firewall, PPPoE, hub and many other features. Check it out at http://www.cayman.com It works great and I never have a problem with PPPoE emulation. I also have higher speeds than I would otherwise have due to the robustness of the unit. It also includes complete statistics and diagnostics.
:)
I went from ME 70 times faster to XP 108 times faster:) :)

From my Xperience XP is a better product then Win98. It seems to me that for new user that never used Windows, it will be actually easy to learn.
For a knowladable "Tweak it" Win98 Users it will “Suck” for a while. Not because the product is bad, but because a lot of settings changed places, and it is going to be pain in the neck to get use too.
BTW, by by NetBEUI.
