View Full Version : USB Cable Modems bad?
Hey guys......after dealing with some frequent problems with my cable service over the past few weeks, I gave in and called the Roadrunner tech support. I described my problem, and the guy said that many users with my modem on our service (Toshiba PCX1100 on Roadrunner in Rochester NY) had been having the same problem. He also said they would be doing a firmware upgrade on my modem tonite (how conveinient), but he scheduled a service appointment to swap my PCX1100 for a PCX1100U (the usb version of my modem), because he said they had not been experiencing problems with those.
Anyone here think i'll be worse off with a USB modem? I know how USB DSL modems are known to be pretty bad, so I was wondering if i'd be going into the same thing with a USB Cable modem. Thanks for taking the time to read my long and boring post! :)

all of the usb modems suck .. the modems are great , but the drivers will never install properly. RCA, TOSHIBA, COM21, if it uses a direct USB connection it sux sux sux
i would pass on it and stick to a nic:rotfl: :rotfl:     :2cool:
I just swapped out a Best Data cable modem I was having problems with for a Toshiba PCX1100U. It is a docsis modem with USB and NIC capabilities. After running it with the NIC card I decided to try it with USB. After changing it and doing the RWIN tweaks I got the following speed tests:
Time (US east) Test Results..
2001-05-30 01:55:06 Speed test 765/103 kbps
2001-05-30 01:26:50 Speed test 553/114 kbps
The first number is with a USB connection. The second is with the NIC connection. The best test I ever got with the NIC was 576. This is on Cox Express cable and there were many earlier tests with both the Best Data and Toshiba on NIC which I didnt bother to post. The latest test put me in the top 100 for all Cox cable subscribers. Hope you have the same luck with your new modem.
USB modems can be faster at times but they don't handle lotsf of data at the same time very well. for example if your using napster and your downloading 2 files and uploading 1 file, it's gona suck. UsB also has alot of secuirity flaws. Very easy to hack into even with a firewall. I would just get a diffrent modem with A NIC

the toshiba PCX1100U has both a port for usb and a port for ethernet, so ull be able to use either one with it
the usb cable modems are good to use. the drivers for the modem come with the modem itself.it will be fine to use the usb cable moden.:p

the usb aspect of the above metioned modems sux, if you get one and use the usb then if you ever need to reinstall the drivers it will almost certainly not reinstall the drivers properly, and might even require a truck roll to get the drivers back in.. i will just say this trust me. but if you dont have fun wih the usb and please come back to post your thoughts on the subject once you do have to reinstall the drivers.. especially for the rca .. it is your choice
have a good day:p :p     :rotfl:

2HY I am located in Webster, NY and Time Warner Swapped out my Toshiba PCX1100 for the 1100U. The modem has USB and ETHERNET capabilities. Just continue using your NIC and you should be fine.
