Over the last 60 days, I have not been able to reach Speedguide.net from my home computer. I am on RoadRuner and each time I try I get the error:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings
Traceroute shows "time outs" after the 19 hop
Road Runner had no solutions or even an explaintion.
Whay did this just start to happen????

Maybe this will resolve the problem, or not. Go to c:\Windows\ and locate a file named hosts and open it with notepad. Delete any thing with speedguide.net in there. Hope that helps.

its a hosts file, not a sam file. Make sure you check the right one...

EvilAjax,
Your recommendation was right on the money! I am typing this reply from my home computer.
This is a "fix" I think everyone should know about.
THANKS!!

Haha, you're welcome. Anytime dude. I had a similar problem with microsoft.com, I couldn't download any updates because the site was unreachable. That's how I fixed my problem, thought I'd let you give it a shot! So how does speedguide.net look like from your home computer? Sweet, eh?:D

Is it neccessary to delete the host file?
cause I have speedguide installed too

I did exactly what Ajax said. Find the HOST file ( Not the HOST.sam file). Double click on HOST, you will be asked to open it with ?????, I scrolled down and selected NotePad. When it opened there where 50 -60 URL's listed. I deleted all that said Speedguide and then saved it. That was it! Everything worked.
I actually had a couple other web sites that were unreachable so I repeated the process (actually I ended up deleting all URLs except 2). So for all web sites are reachable and I have experienced no ill effects.
Just to be safe, when I first opened the HOST file I copied all the URL's just in case some thing went wrong, it turns out it was not necessary.
Good Luck
I had a different problem for a couple of months.
My IE browser started crashing everytime i tried to connect to speedguide.
Then when my ISP switched servers it works fine now.

well other than LMhost.sam but the reason is to cache the dns entrees on a computer to speed up access, the problem is that the file doesn't get updated much so that's not good, here is the windows search order for dns entrees, 1. Proxy server, 2. host file, 3. DNS server. So if the host file has the wrong dns entree it will never check the dns server, which frankly sucks, O well.
