I think you should try to find what port tribe is using and make sure they are open. He is right about that!.
You have a firewall also?
i have a software firewall but it was installed before the linksys and works fine with tribes2

i emailed linksys for tech support but they seem to be notoriously slow
im trying to find out via tribes.com but no luck yet
Is there a program that allows me to see what programs are using (or trying to use) what ports on my pc ?

There is surely a place in the multiplayer options or somewhere in the book where it is stated what is the port its using. If not try to get the port info on the Tribe support page and make sure that those ports are open on your linksys.

In order to run from behind a firewall, Tribes requires a range of UDP ports to be open. These allow Tribes to communicate properly with the Master Server.
It will be necessary to contact your ISP or network administrator about opening UDP ports. The range of UDP ports to be opened is 28000-28008.
Hope this help... found it on Tribe support

I run ZoneAlarm Pro and 4-Port Linksys Router and I have had to do nothing to make Tribes 2 work for me. What firewall you using?
im using zonelabs zonealarm (free version)
my local intranet traffic is horifically slow (5 mins for a 12 meg transfer)
and my internet traffic seems to be a bit slower than it was before the router
