Ok, heres the deal
I just got my new Linksys cable/DSL and voice router and i finally got it to work.
Thanks MS and your crappy win98 ICS that made me re-install and finally fomat my HD.
Anyway, my internet connection is fine (a little slow) but it varies day to day so i cant complain about that (yet)
However, with my home network of my desktop and a laptop, the network speeds are horrendously slow. It estimates 5 mins to transfer a 12 meg file from my lap top my desktop.
Before i was using ICS and a 10 mbit hub and a transfer like that would only take 10 or 20 secs.
Now 5 mins and thats IF the transfer completes (which sometime they dont)
Any help ?

Are you using 802.11b wireless connectivity like Proxim or 3Com? If so, it may be that you're out of range, or the signal strength to your transmitter tower isn't strong enough to support nominal throughput. Try relocatting your laptop closer, and try it again.

Im using good old CAT5 ethernet cable.
Nothing is wireless

Well.. Revert to your hub, and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, then it's your router.

yeah but that means going back to win98 ICS
which i dont want to do
i had to delete a lot of windows files and re-install several times before it would leave my system

i plugged my cables into the good old 10mbit hub and presto, instant fast ethernet with no dropped connections
Its definetly the router/switch
Dammit linksys, i heard such good things about you
Weird part is before i got the router MAC address accepted by my cable provider, the 10/100 switch worked fine. Go figure.

Do you have NetBEUI installed and bound to your NIC only, and go into the properties of TCP/IP bound to your NIC, and unbind it from MS Networking, File and Print sharing. That way, you networking is running only on NetBEUI, which is nice and fast for file sharing, and TCP is loaded only for internet access.

That helped slighty
now it only estimates 6 mins to transfer a 12 meg file instead of 11 mins
I think my router is just screwed.

I just transfered 12 megs in 15 seconds. Is this good?

Well after about 8 frustrating hours and several emails and phone calls to linksys tech support i went out and bought a Netgear RT314 router. My netgear setup and was running perfectly within 5 mins. My conclusion, my linksys was screwed. Even worse, i went out and bought another linksys router (hoping to switch the working one for the broken one) and that one is screwed too. Must be a bad batch that linksys doesnt want to fess up to.
Oh yeah, Tech support was really helpful, especially telling me my bad speeds were due to the fact i was running CAT5 568A cable and that CAT5 568B cable would magically solve my problems.

Why were you using MS ICS with a router ???? I and a number of my friends are using the Linksys wtihout every having a problem. I doubt if you encountered a "bad batch" -- sounds like a setup problem...

He was using ICS with a 10Mbit hub prior to purchasing a router, and eliminating the ICS setup. Not a config error, we've discussed this throughout the thread.

Point made and taken. But that notwithstanding, I doubt very much if he got into a "bad batch" of Linksys routers:rolleyes: (One maybe, but the probability of two with the same defect approaches zero -- believe it or not, the company does have quality control.) So what does that leave as a most likely scenerio for the cause of the problem????? Hmmm...

Incidentally it was not the regular linksys router reviewed here on speedguide.net
It was the linksys BEFN2PS4

I mainly got this router because the phone feature seemed interesting.
Im mostly happy with my netgear, I just wish they let me forward a range of ports.
Sigh, oh well

Product does sound interesting. Understandable why you tried it out. Specs for unit look good, should have been no problem.

It would be interesting if you followed up with LINKsys to see if they would be of any additional assistance. Like lets face it I am sure they don't want a lemon out on the market.
