Hey,

Can someone tell me how to create a loop-back IP address.
My machine has been really slow on boot-up (it actually hangs for almost 2 min) and it's really driving me Carzy !!!

I was told that I can create a loop-back IP address to help with this problem, but I'm not too sure how to go about doing it.
Can anyone help?

Win 98SE
Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter v.4
Earthlink DSL 640/90

Thanks,
Teddy.

what does it hang on do you know??
you need to go to start->run and in run type in msconfig and hit ok then klick on the tab at the top that says startup in there UNcheck everything except the one that says systemtray and hit ok at the bottom and it will ask to restart say ok and restart does it still hang??

if yes then go to start->settings->control panel
in control panel double click on where it says system then the device manager tab at the top

in device manager click on ALL the plus+ signs to make them minus- signs and then look do you see anything that has a red X,
or a yellow ! mark or yellow ? mark if so reinstall the driver for that device

if you see no conflicts then you need to search on microsofts help site i think i saw where they have a patch for some machines that hang on shut down and startup

your loop back ip is 127.0.0.1 , but i am not sure of what you are trying to do with it??

       :2cool:

Go to Start>>Settings>>Contol Panel>>Network. Find your NIC card in the list and double click it. Under the IP Address tab, assign it this IP address... 192.168.10.21 ... and set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 . That should help your slow boot up problems. Also consider defragging your hard drive once a week!

PS... You MUST restart your computer after you make those changes.

On some machines slow boot times can be fixed by things like bios flashes and updates to nic drivers (well I know about the bios flashes can speed boot times on some models computer of the oem I do tech support for). So I might update the nic drivers and check to see if there are any bios flashes that are available.

The problem with assigning a static IP address is if he is on cable or DSL...heh, could lead to a problem if he's set to obtain IP auto.

Yes letting TCP/IP obtain auto can add 10 seconds or so to your bootup time as it looks and waits for a DHCP server, but unless he's behind a router, locking his IP may lead to some troubles unless he know's his ISP's plan.

Well, I figured it would be the same since he basically has VERIZON DSL (640/90 data-over-voice fake DSL crap) that they allow Earthlink to put their nametag on. By the way...I have the same thing and I had the same problem. I made those same changes and it helped out a whole bunch (well, when I had a Crappaq PC... you know... Compaq?). After I built the system in my sig, those changes helped out slightly. He can try it, and if he still has that problem he can always go back and set it back to "Obtain IP Address Automatically".
