Probably got your attention didn't I?

I recently talked with the head of @home for my area. We have a 128kb/s cap on.. Like 16Kb.. Big time sucks.

He told me there is a way around this. It involves some registry tweaking/hacking but wouldn't give me any specific details. What you basically need to do is mask your modem/computer to the routers so they don't know to apply the upload cap. It is the router (in my area at least) that caps the upload speed.

Does anyone know what exactly to do?
I'm still searching online right now and I thought I'd ask the cable tweaker guys..

Let me know.

If you're talking to the "head of @home for my area" then by all means, please get more details, that should prove interesting.

Until then, (or until someone proves us wrong) here's our take on the topic:

I have had, and know for a fact that @Home's upload cap is beatable. I've gotten over 1mbit speeds upstream and downstream on my @home connection, and am currently on someone elses computer which is getting 900KB/sec upstream (just tested on DSLreports.com)

I'm not sure exactly what to do to get it to work, but where there's the ends, there's a means, right?

hey now....i have been using at home for almost 1.5 yrs now and have consistently and reliably gotten upload speeds of over 900kbps......until last week. now im capped at 128kbps and not very happy about it. i can still DL at over 3 mbps but i need more up speed. my node in this neighborhood is designed for 500 users and i know for a fact there are less than 25other users that are on it. i say it's not a matter of stealing from your neighbor, but rather the at homepeople are selling all that extra BW somewhere else. i know they have it to spare cause for the last year my up speed was the most awesome!! sometimes over 1mbps.......so if you are on at home and youre not capped yet.... you will be, so start lining up an alternate provider asap....i offered to pay triple what im paying now for the same BW and they just laughed and informed me that all at home users will be capped if they arent already....im looking into T1 service now and it looks promising.......if i could just get over that damn 5 year commitment. yours in BB.

Well just in case anyone doesn't know, I figured out that @home somehow caps using the MAC address of the modem, at the router. Buy a new modem, and you might stand a chance of getting back precious bandwidth.

This might be old news.

Nope it not done with your mac address. Its done at your providers end. So I would not mess with the address. I work on cable for 6 years all uploads are done by the provider. Where ever you heard this, Don't try it. You will end up messing your services up. Not trying to be smart just giveing you some good advice.:)

so ...are you saying i can get someone who works at the head end to remove this cap? i do have a friend who works at the headend, but i would not ask him to put his job at risk just so i could get back some BW. unlesssssss......

I doubt anyone would put there job at risk to increase your upload. If your not happy with your up load cap. Is there any DLS services that offer different packages. If so you may want to go this route. For someone to do this for you would cost him his job. Plus sooner or later You would be caught. They do scan for this all the time. Whichwould lead to you getting a fine and loss of service. So either way not such a good I deal. The cap you have is what you are stuck with unless they sell different package which I doubt.;)

Buying new modem will not increase your upload:) :)

i am in the process of arranging to locate my server with a friend who already has a full T1 line. the fastest dsl around here is the idsl service which is just a full 3 channel isdn, which aint worth ****.

Thats not good either. Maybe if you can get some of the people around who use home to complain or write up a patition this might help. Home is crazy. At least roadrunner gives us 400KBps up. GoodLuck. Sorry to here this. The only other way I know is to get a busniess acount and that is expensive.:( You would think what home charges you could get a higher upload.

you see, they have no competition here. so they can do what they want. what i am waiting for is for the same ruling that applies to incumbent local exchange carriers (ilecs) that forces them to give competitors (clecs) access to their network to be applied to cable providers as well. im sure once they have to open thier lines and network to other cable companies, we will see a drastic improvement in their attitude as well as their service. at least thats whats supposed to happen.

Yo,

What I was saying about the MAC address is, believe it or not, I had to add a new modem to my account as part of some tech service issues, and the new modem was uncapped. My original modem was upsteam capped.

My account wasn't deleted, or re-instated. All I did was give them the new serial and MAC address for the new modem. Incidentally, it wasn't a modem issue and I ended up returning the new modem and going back to the old. Now, the old modem is uncapped too.
