View Full Version : Help With Cable Settings?
Hi, people.
I have a question about cable speed.
I’m presently using a cable connection in the Youngstown, Ohio area called, “Zoom”. It’s the only one that I can use in my area.
By chance, is anyone else here using it? And if so, are you satisfied with the speeds you’re getting?
And be honest? They offer downloads of up to 500 kbps, and uploads up to 250kpbs.
That really isn’t that fast for a cable connection, is it?
I’ve taken various speed tests, and I’m getting results ranging from 4 times faster then a 56k modem,
to 8 times tops.
Not to good for cable?
I was wondering if someone such as, “Lobo”, or anyone else with computer knowledge, can suggest
settings which would give me the best performance, with what my cable company offers?
You know, settings that would give me the fastest downloads, speed up webpage opening, ect.?
Any help from you fine people would be appreciated. Oh, by the way, I did download Cablenut, and I’m
presently using the settings that they’ve suggested.
Thanks,
John!
Sting, does anyone else around you have the same cable company? Have you checked with them about their speeds?
The speeds you are getting are really slow for cable, but you know that, because we talked about it. Is DSL an option where you are?
Try a test from this link. (http://chi.speakeasy.net:/)
Please highlight the results and hit control c to copy and then paste results to this thread. If you would, please do another TCP/IP analyzer test and post it too.
Here is a copy of mine from this morning.
Test running..........
** Speed 2475(down)/364(up) kbps **
(At least 49 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.:(

I went to that link - I'm happy about my download, but look at this sh*tty a$$ upload! Any ideas???? Anyone?!?
Test running.........
** Speed 4140(down)/78(up) kbps **
(At least 82 times faster than a 56k modem)
I've found that the upload is off a little bit, but for the most part, it's pretty accurate. Would you happen to know what your upload cap is? If it's that low, I have to assume your provider has an upload cap in place. Do you see the same type of results on other speed tests, as far as upload speed? :)

Until about 7:30 yesterday evening when a tech had me reset my cable modem I was getting between 800-1100kb/s UPLOAD. Thus why I am so pissed off. :) Wouldn't you be? ;) I have a tech appointment coming here on Friday @ 1pm to do checks on my cable lines and I'm going to ask him what the f*ck is going on. Friends of mine in this same service area (also more crowded areas of town) get at least 500kb/s so I know with the very small amount of people in this area of town my ~800-1000kb/s upload was accurate. I just need to get it back somehow! Any ideas about what the RESETTING of the cable modem did? (The tech said it took it back to factory defaults) but I've always gotten that upload speed. Any ideas I'm all ears.. errrr... all eyes.
Thanks :D
It sounds like you are having line problems and it's good that a tech is coming out to check everything. Who do you have as a provider and what modem are you using? Not that this is going to make any difference, but if they're anything like mine, a cap may have been downloaded to your modem when you did the reset.
Speaking of reset, what was wrong to start with, that they had you reset the modem in the first place?
If it were me, I'd try and reset the modem again, but if your like me, you've already done that! Outside of this, best thing to do is wait until they get the line checked out. You also might want to run some pings and traces to your gateway, DNS, and DHCP server, if there is one listed, and see if any of these is showing unusually high times. Hopefully, you've done that in the past and have an idea of what times you should be expecting to see.
I still think your just going to have to sit tight until the line is checked. Sorry that I don't have an instant answer for you, but line noise and such can do some very strange things to you.
blebs99,
I’ve checked the speeds at, dsl.reports that others are getting who are using the same cable connection.
They’re about the same as mine.
Downloads between 200 to 450 kbps, and uploads from 50 to 250 kbps.
That sucks big time for a cable connection.
That’s why I’m hoping that someone like Lobo, or someone else with his knowledge, can recommend settings for my RWIN, MaxConnections, ect., which would give me peak performance with what I’ve got.
I’m stuck buddy, this is the only cable that I can get in my area.
I called “RoadRunner”, and was very impressed with what they had to offer.
But as soon as I told them where I lived, they said that I was in “Zoom’s” jurisdiction, and they couldn’t help me.
I did call my cable company and complain.
In fact, I’ve called them about 25 times over the last few months complaining about speed.
They said they’re tired of hearing from me. *LOL*
I’m about ready to tell them where they can stick their cable.
Sometimes I wonder if I should convert back to the dialup modem, and tweak the hell
out of the registry.
I’ll bet I could come close in speed to what I have now.
So, by chance, does anyone know of any dialup modems that give you decent speed?
And please do not suggest, A.O.L. *LOL*
I can't believe that the cable company even sells a package like that! DSL, in most cases, would be faster. I wouldn't go back to dial-up until the companies have the new V.92 standards in place, if you can at all help it, but then you'll need to see if your modem can be upgraded to the new standard or else buy a new dial up modem. There just isn't a whole lot more you can do to your connection, that's what the problem is! RWIN of 256960 is going to give you 4111kbps at 500ms, which is way above what you have for a speed package. In fact, it's way above what I have too. I'm not trying to keep you away from Mr. Lobo. I just don't want to see you get really discouraged because of a poor performing Cable Company. I think you should just turn into a down right rude, mean, American and Sue them. Isn't that the American thing to do today?
Lobo: See if there is anything that hasn't been done to this gentlemans connection please!

I called my provider and they said that when I reset my modem it most likely downloaded the most up to date version of their firmware for my RCA Cable modem. They (the tech) said that by downloading that firmware it put a upload cap of 128kb/s on my connection. I wrote another post specifically asking about this, but do you know about any way I could get my older version of firmware back? ;) He said that when resetting it self-updates with the server but hell, I'm all ears.. errr eyes right now. Anything positive with getting as close to my old habit of 800kb/s or so would be happy in my book. Even 400 or 500 would be making me grin like a kid in a candy store. :) Anything puhlease... and what do you think resetting my modem again could do? Cuz unlike you :) I've NOT done that yet, cuz I was going to ask questions on some AWESOME forums that I know of ;) and see what might be able to be done. Thanks you kind sir(s) :D

every where I go I get different upload speeds, however my dwonload is always pretty consistant at 2200 to 2500. I don't know why but it seems that there is no accurate way to test upload speeds. just what your machine tells ya. that's why i sue NetStat Live available from analog X.
thought it may help:)
It appears that whatever has been done has been done by cable company and I see no way around it, if a tech is coming Friday, offer him a cold one:) :)

So Lobo, the all-knowing knowledgable, you think that it's only in the head-end that I'd ever have a cold day in hell's chance of getting my upload fixed? Right now on the most recent test I ran I got 54kb/s upload and 4100down... the down is QUITE alright but the up is annoying. The techs have said that a cap in the firmware set me at a upload cap of 128kb/s. :( Man I wish there were some options.
Do this and tell me your system specs please:
Please click in my signature where it says Test your tweak here, then:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you.:) :)

Whether that was meant for me or whoever, here is MY info:
TCP options string = 020405b4
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 49152
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 49152
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1966.08 kbps (245.76 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 786.432 kbps (98.304 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = OFF
Time to live left = 51 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = OFF
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
365329 connections tested since 03.10.2001.
Analyzer version: Beta 0.99
System specs?, go to help page below in sig, 2nd page at bottom it will tell you how to turn off proxy server, see if that helps, also set Tcp1323Opts to 1:) :)

Oh damn sorry man. I am a bit flustered and clueless with all of this stuff that's going on. My system:
PIII 600, 384MB RAM (pc133), Win2k Pro, 27gb Maxtor, 45gb Maxtor, Voodoo4 4500agp, Soundblaster Live pci512.. I guess that shall suffice for now huh?
If you have Tcp1323Opts set to 1 to allow scaling I would jack that RWIN up to 513920 or 522680, reboot after changing RWIN is Default Recieve Window, do you have adjuster:) :) :)

Yessir, I have the cablenut program with the adjuster on it. (That is what you mean right?) The tcpxxxx whatever those numbers were (Don't feel like clicking backspace again) was already set at 1. So I'll adjust those settings how you recommend. (I just removed the proxy usage setting a minute ago). Thank you thus far, I hope to at least learn lots of crucial information from you guys. :) Be back in a few... gotta change some numbers ;)
In Cablenuts adjuster you change number in 3 places, save to registry at bottom and reboot, those places are:
1. Default Recieve Window
2. GlobalmaxTcpWindowSize
3. Tcp Window Size:) :D

Okay d0000000d I have all of that stuff added and I've been sitting here surfing around as usual and eating dinner. :) Just thought that I'd let you know. Kinda anxiously awaiting for the tech to get here in the morning and hoping that he's at least a semi-cool individual that at least will understand where I'm coming from with my lack of upload speed :D If I'm not at least reaching the max... I know I'm going to be awfully ballistic b/c I'm what I'd like to say "broadband spoiled" :) I'm soooooo used to having that upload speed that now it's irritating NOT to have it. :( Oh well, enough grumblng from me for now. IF there's any other ideas that might flow through that very impressive mind of your's about either improvements in download and/or uploading... let me be the 2nd to know :) Thank you.
