My mother-in-law got AOL DSL. Will the registry tweaks work? I belive the easyMTU program indicates that AOL works differently. She is only getting about 280 down. The telco is Southwestern Bell. I also have Southwestern Bell, but under Telocity and now get 1300-1500 down after tweaking my registry. I don't want to goto her house until I know so I can get in and get out without 8 billion questions....
Thanks.
I know nothing about AOOL's new DSL :)
Welcome to the board! The best tweak I can think of for AOL, is to get rid of it. I have a friend who has it and won't leave it. To put it mildly, they spend more, "down time" because of the messed up adaptors for the protocol that AOL uses.
I'm basing this on regular dial-up service and not DSL. I really can't say how it would work on DSL. Maybe someone else out here has it and can explain.
I don't think you'll be able to do any tweaking to it. The protocol is very tempermental, and in my opinion, very unstable.
I'm sorry that I'm not telling you what you'd like to hear, but once your in the AOL system, your at their mercy as to how fast or slow your going to go.
If I'm wrong, please put me in my place somebody. I know this doesn't sound good for a reply to a first time poster, and don't get me wrong, your most welcome here and perhaps someone can say something different about the situation. :(
baddawwg, you sure it's mom in law who got the stuff :) ,lol

My sister just got AOL dls. Try some of the tweaks here for DLS. Back reg up first. They worked for her. GoodLuck! Acutally It's not bad I messed with on my sister computer. ;)
Try going to the link I'll give you. It's for AOL Tweaking and the Like.
LINK (http://user.aol.com/axcel216/aoltoy.htm) ;)
Storm90, are they using the AOLSOCK in the DSL protocol? If they are, this might have a negative effect on speed. Did you get to look around in your sisters registry?
Sorry I'm being a pain in the butt, but me needs more input! :p

Lobo - yep it's mom's in law's AOL-DSL. She waited since before Christmas to get it and just got it. She won't dump it. I hate it and she wants me to fix it. Guess I'll watch these posts a little longer and go over and try some manual tweaks sometime this week.....woe is me. To everyone who responds - thank you.
baddawgg just make sure that before you do a thing to back up the all important registry that is now running. I've seen too many people not do it and have the computer owner very angry because things didn't work out as planned. ;)
Me included-In case your wondering, I've messed up before! What else is new.

Blebs It worked fine and yes the socks in there. I download the Patch and used the settings I wanted out of it and Changed the rwin and defaultTTL. Plus added a few of my own. I never use a ptach on hers It fussy. I always ad tweaks to hers manuly. She is getting her caps Which are about medium speed. Aol don't have high Dls settings. Unless you pay more. I can not say her setting will work with his. Not every computer is the same. He will just have to try and see. But back his reg up first. She has a older computer 233 penMMX with 64mgs of memory. She is happy with it. I was bored the other night when I visted her and she wanted her computer to go faster so I just messed with thtweaks till I got them right.
It might work for him and might not. GoodLuck! Plus he might try the web site you posted. I didn't know about that one. Thanks for posting it. I am going to send it to her.

My mother-in-law just upgraded to AOL 6.0 and talked with someone at AOL that said the performance should be better. She's now getting around 450 down. Whoopee. I'll try the manual fixes so I can undo it if it doesn't work or it makes it worse. My impression is that AOL basically sucks.
450 down, Bytes or bits, if it's Bytes I would not touch it :) :) :) :) :)
Hi the easy way to help her would be to go to help page below, directions their, the speed patch you need is: sguide_tweak_98_ME
and some others Web patch (Faster loading of web pages) and if her OS is 95/98/SE you will need Tcp386 Fix patch, you'll have great time chatting with her telling her why this and that
I just don't want to see your Mother-in-law put the smack down on you if it all goes South! Can't stress it enough, BE SURE to BACK UP the orignal REGISTRY!
Anymore, if anyone wants me to tinker with AOL, I tell them no way. I don't have any exposure to the DSL AOL, and I want to make sure that we understand each other on that part. Storm90 is a great person to ask for help in these areas. If her sisters computer can take some manual tweaking, then you should be able to do something with it. I'm out of my league on this one though. I don't want to come off as a mean crabby person to ya! ;)

Well, I just added the tweaks to her computer and the download times just about doubled. They went from around 700kbits down to ~1350kbits down. I could also notice a difference in the speed at which sites (including this one) loaded. Even sites run off AOL appear to be loading faster. Thanks again for the advice.
Glad to hear that it worked out for you. I've had so many problems with AOL that I'm to the point of not even getting involved with it. Give yourself a nice large pat on the back! Just remember, it doesn't always work out, but you knew that, didn't you. :D
