View Full Version : Am I PPPoE or just PPP?
I just wanted to know why, when in "run winipcfg",the window I get starts out as"Ethernet Adapter Information" then "PPP Adapter" "Adapter Address" ETC,. My connection is Bellsouth ADSL. I downloaded the patches and program from "Cablenut". It wanted to know what my connection was and only listed :56k/cable/pppoe. Am I to use pppoe when asked? I thought that was different then ppp. Please help.

PPP means Point to Point IP.
I would say just about all (at least win/98se) has the PPP in their wininpcfg.
The main thing to look for is the IP address. The PPP should not have one. but your other one should. as for the selection.. Someone on ASDL would have to anwser that one. I'm on cable.
Thx Buggyman,
I know what they mean, ppp and pppoe "on ethernet", I just don't know if I'm "OE". Anybody know where I can look to find out?
Thanks, Photog

most likely your PPPoE, as PPP is only used for dial up connection.
PPPoE you have to log on with name and password.
PPPoE ( Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet ) is a method for building PPP sessions and encapsulating packets, as described in RFC2516. Although it is not a standard, PPPoE is already being used by a number of DSL providers. It requires either routers that have built-in PPPoE support, or PPPoE software to "dial up" and establish the session. See below on my hep page Dannjr has info on PPPoE
:)
Lobo, thanks for the info. I'll go to cablenut. BTW I s/b logged in,it shows that I am logged in, it says >>Hello, photog [log out]. ??
I don't know that much about PPPoE but we have a patch for it on patch page or you can try Cablenuts, but there are instructions on my help page and Dannjr has some about PPPoE on left on my help page :)

PPPOE is the protocol that let the DSL carrier to authenticate your identify (so no one will steal signal).
It is a pain in the neck and sooner ot later will cause trouble.
The best thing to do is to buy Cable/DSL Router that support PPPOE (Linksys, SMC, Netgear, and others).
You type the ID and PW to the Router, and the Router (hardware) keeps the connection alive forever.
You uninstall all the PPPOE software, and you get faster clean Ethernet connection.
For bonus you get Hardware Firewall, you can share the connection with more computers, some Routers (SMC) even have printer server inside.
The only drawback Router cost about $100.
