I currently am getting Telstra ADSL in less than 10 days, and with the plan im on, have heard it had really ****ty speeds of around 64kb p/s instead of 264 kb p/s, and was wondering if anyone could tell me about tweaking it...

thanks,

Charlie

Try this out *******.......HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP,DefaultRcvWindow,"32032"
HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP,DefaultTTL,"64"
HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP,PMTUDiscovery,"1"
HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP,PMTUBlackHoleDetect,"0"
HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP,Tcp1323Opts,"0"
HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP,SackOpts,"1"
HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\Parameters,MaxDupAcks,"3"

Also be sure to set your MTU to 1496.

You should set after applying those tweaks.

Apologies *******......MTU at 1492, not 1496.

You forgot to tell ADSL_******* that you have to click on the start button and click run then type regedit

Are you sure you can tweak adsl, what does this mean then:

Uncapping xDSL.

Three words: "Don't even bother".

xDSL technology doesn't work in a way that permits you to have any settings that diverge in the slightest from what you're supposed to have. Any differences and the system cuts you off. Period. This is because xDSL is shared at the DSLAM and not on the medium. Each line is treated as a individual connection, and configured as such. You get what you pay for. And no more. Cable, on the other hand, works differently.

or is Xdsl different from ADSL

when you open up regedit there is a tree on the left click on each folder in turn and when you click on each folder a new one will open up
e.g.
1.HKLM,System
2.CurrentControlSet
3.Services
4.VxD
5.MSTCP
once opened up the folder you need(which is the last one)you will see DefaultRcvWindow if you double click that and change it from the default to 32032

Read my previous reply, are you sure adsl can be tweaked for better d/l speeds?

Adsl_*******,
The tweaking we're using is to get the best out of what your provider gives you.
Uncapping is an attemp to override what your provider gives you. It's Not legal.
So you can legally do the tweaking we give you. So you're safe with these tweaks.
One thing these guys didn't tell you is to backup you registery..read this page here-->Lobo's help page. (http://microsystems.homestead.com/lobos.html)go down the page and you'll see his info on saving your registery.
Good Luck and welcome to Speedguide! :)

Ok, my plan says that my downstream is 256 kbs p/s and 64 kbs p/s upstream.

does this mean with these registery tweaks you are helping me with, of which i still have no clue of how to use
( i think it's because they haven't installed any software for it, so i will try once i've got it)
i will get my proper download speeds of 256 kilobytes per second?

not sure about downloading at 256kbps????
My ISP is capped at 512kbps and I am downloading at 70kbps but I have heard somewhere that an ADSL will d/l at a fast speed!!!!

Adsl_Dumbass

well, i heard that some people using the same ISP as im getting, reckon that the b in kb was bits, not bytes, and with the plan that im on, would recieve a d/l speed no higher than 32, and htat really sux, so i emailed telstra, but i hope those guys aren't telling the truth! i thought ADSL was faster than cable, cause it doesn't run of a network.

heres the link of the plan im on(or getting)

its called 'Freedom Standard' http://www.bigpond.com/broadband/adsl/pricing.asp
now, im not sure if this is true, but some guys on another forum reckon it's bits, not bytes...

i emailed telstra, and are still waiting for a reply, but you guys's help would be great, heres the link for the thread on "bits" http://www.playnow.com.au/ubb/Forum3/HTML/001836.html

Thanks GUys, you are hte greatest

ADSL *******...

p.s. sorry for being such a *******

Adsl_*******,
Yep... them guys are right.. that is what it amounts to... 32KB/sec... sounds pricy to me... but I'm on cable so I can't really say.
any time you see Kb/sec divide it by 8 and you get KB/sec.
On Cable I download at about 200KB/sec which is about 1600Kb/sec. and I only pay $39.95 a month for it.
I doubt tweaking will let you get much more than what your provider is offering. Sounds like they have a cap.
Just My Opinion! :)

damn, so, with that registery tweak, what speeds am i looking at?

JamieLee2k
04-21-01, 12:11 AM
you are looking at about 30kbps d/l I d/l at 70kbps and I pay £20.00 well £19.99 really

I hope you made a boo boo there... 70kbps is just under 9KB/sec.. you sure it's not 70KB/sec?

I'm also in Aust. Cable deployment is really poor here - only east coast capital cities, and they have stopped deploying it anywhere. Because of this, people wanting broadband are forced to get ADSL through Telstra (main carrier of australia). becoz we're in aust we're paying effectively $35 US a month for 32KB which is pretty poor, and because of telstra's lack of infrastructure and unwillingless to upgrade, all our data gets routed to melbourne (bottom of aust) and it gets very congested leading to ~200 pings and stuff for many users.
www.adslusers.com.au (http://www.adslusers.com.au) - check out the main page - gives a good insight into the sentiment towards adsl in general in australia. as telstra is half-govt owned, its got a helluva monopoly on the market so us end users are getting totally ****ed over in terms of broadband access in aust.
