i have usb alcatel modem..sorry if its a dumb question..i looked up some info..and dial up adapter info said ppp etc but i dont know if ppp IS pppoe...thanks
I don't know either but I do know you can call a 800 number and ask, and then we all know what to do, but generally you have to log on with name and password if your on PPPoE:
PPPoE you have to log on with name and password.
PPPoE ( Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet ) is a method for building PPP sessions and encapsulating packets, as described in RFC2516. Although it is not a standard, PPPoE is already being used by a number of DSL providers. It requires either routers that have built-in PPPoE support, or PPPoE software to "dial up" and establish the session.
Note: If your ISP has implemented PPPoE and you are tweaking the Windows Registry, note that PPPoE supports MaxMTU=1492 or less, rather than 1500.
Please see this thread by another member:http://161.58.189.82/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=14&t=000138
Also this one:http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2516.html
This should set MTU to 1492 for 95/98/SE/W2k/NT4
No ME yet: http://microsyspro.com/
The above is for Enternet x DSL Software :)

the alcatel diagnostics info from start programs said PPPoA .....is that different from ppoe and should i stick with the 1500 mtu i use from your info (tweaks)?
thanks, dave
No PPPoA is different than PPPoE, ask about this in cable and dsl forum, they know more on the subject, and no MTU would not be 1500 :)
