Hey Everyone,

I have to say i'm a little ignorant when it comes to what my settings should be with a cable modem. I used the TCP/IP Analyzer and I hope someone could give me some useful tips. Thanks in advance.

PIII 850
256megs of ram
3com nic
Road Runner Cable

Here's the settings...

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 59680
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 59680
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2387.2 kbps (298.4 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 954.88 kbps (119.36 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 51 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Hello! What operating system do you have and have you installed any patches at this point?

everything looks allright, except you might benefit from a larger RWIN value... Try installing one of our patches if you want.

I'm running windows 98SE.

I changed the RWIN value to 513920. I was wondering if this is a good value or maybe someone has had better luck with a different value. Thanks again for the help so far.

Well to be honest you need other settings that patches put in, then if you want to change RWIN then try it and see if you like it, I'll leave you directions for a good patch as you do not have default registry, do this:
Go to www,Cablenut.com, click on software at top of page :Download 4.0 and 4xx to 4.02. 4xx to 4.02 updates 4.0. Cablenuts patch will uninstall prior patches before applying his.You need patch below
(vtcp386 patch is only for users of 98 and SE).This is located on right hand side of page.
(NOTE Win 95 users need vtcp386 and Winsock for Win 95) these are located on right hand side of page. Install 4.0 then install 4xx to 4.02 .
On desktop will be a Cablenut 4.0 folder, click on this folder, select ccs, then select
Cable
Select fast settings
This will bring up adjuster, blank boxes just mean default values are being used, click on save to registry at bottom and REBOOT for it to work, Please check back for updates or reading. Before coming back, do this please: take our TCP/IP Analyzer test at top of Tweak Forum page so I can be sure patch is in.

At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Thank you.
If you installed the Web patch (Faster loading of web pages) you have to install it again as Cablenuts patch uninstalled it prior to installing his, all you have to do is go where you unzipped it to and click on it and reboot. Those who do not have patch go to main page this site, patch page go down until you see the one for your OS and download and install. Thank you
(NOTE: If you change RWIN size number you must change GlobalmaxWindosize to the same number)
Also you have to experiment to see which settings work best for you, normal or fast cable settings, I have seen people with 400 CPU get better speed with fast settings. If it does not work for you, go back to normal cable settings.
(NOTE) inside Cablenut 4.0 folder on desktop it says adjuster if you click on 4.0 on desktop. RIGHT click on adjuster and select shortcut to desktop, same with reboot.

Check back often for updates
How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as www.happypuppy.com (http://www.happypuppy.com) and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it , just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to www.analogX.com (http://www.analogX.com) and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed, really all you need on Net Stat is incoming data, incoming totals and Local machine, right click on Net Stat anywhere, stactics and check these 3 items, the rest need not be checked unless you want them, all you care about is average.
Put system defrag in scheduled tasks to run everyday.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.
(NOTE: at present time www.AOL.com (http://www.AOL.com) seems to be fastest download site, at bottom download aol 6.0)
Or if you wish you may go to www.testmyspeed.com (http://www.testmyspeed.com) and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them.

I'm fixing to call it a night so I will leave you a message, if patch is in on your test it will show RWIN 204400. I know faster,
first you have to bring up Cablenut adjuster,
where it says GlobalmaxTcpWindoSize-leave it BLANK. Now where it says DeafaultRvcWindow is where you would put one of these numbers,
try them and see which one works best for you,
when you put number in that box, click on save to registry at bottom and reboot. OK
try these 481800,513920 Speedguide # and 2 by Cablenut- 522680 and 524176 :) And remember, this is not best test time

Lobo,

Thanks for all the help.. I'll definetly keep playing around with the settings till I find something that works for me and my connection. Well, that's about it. Thanks again.
