I'd be happy to help. Just do a search for a file called "HOSTS", and you should get a couple a hits. Make sure you put in the the "HOSTS" and not in the "HOSTS.bak", cuz then it wont work. When you find the file, open it with Notepad. Then just highlight the text that I added above and paste it into the "HOSTS" file. Save, Exit and restart your browser and a lot of those annoying ads will disappear. It still will not ge rid of them all, but I am finding more and more as I go. Hope this help.

Also, if you want to get rid of the annoying pop-up windows ... Try the Popup killer (or PUK). Sorry, can't remember the site name, but I heard of it from www.techtv.com (http://www.techtv.com) - or your can do a search for it... =)

babbler, you will like it here. This is the only message board that I'm a part of anymore.

Alien, I use to use PUK but I noticed it was a resource hog. I'm on Win2K and I noticed that before I had it, my cpu usage was 1-2 and after, it was 11-13...that was on idle. Plus it was about an extra 5MB MEM Usage. I got rid of it now and use Prey's list, plus if you ever see a popup that isn't in it, you can just add it yourself.

Its cuz it hasnt been created yet, he can just overwrite the Hosts.sam (Sample) file with all the stuff that I have put up there and then Rename the file by removing the .SAM extension.

Exactly, all you need to do is add it to the Hosts file, Save it, close all Internet Browser windows and then resume browsing as normail.

Yes, the Hosts file under Win2K is located in the C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc directory.

If you open the file with notepad and then save again, it will keep the extension (none) if you do save as or whatever it will add the extension. just go to the file and rename removing the extension.

I've been lurking here awhile and recently implemented Prey521's solution to banner-ads. I also had a Host.sam file which I opened in Notepad and pasted his list. All well and good. Except, being a newbie, I would like to understand how this works (I checked "Host" in the help file, not helpful!) and how do I know that it is working! Hope these questions aren't too stupid.

I don't know why I hadn't thought of it myself :mad: ;)

Basically what is does is whenever you come across a web page that requests an ad be posted, your browser will look in the hosts file FIRST to see if it's listed. When it does find it there, it looks to 127.0.0.1 (your own computer) for the requested ad, which of course isn't there.
