Greetings. I'm sure this has come up, but I'm new so hey...

I have a 2 PC LAN at home. I have a W2K Prof. box connected to a Westell DSL modem via a Netgear fa311 NIC. The same machine is connected to a Linksys 4 port 10/100 hub via a Linksys LNE300Tx NIC. My second machine is W98SE, which is connected to the hub via a 3Com 3c905B-TX. Now, the LAN works just fine (using 192.168.0.0 as my addressing scheme). ICS does not. I have read conflicting information on how this setup should work. Micrsoft apparently says that ICS does not support PPPoE, but I read a post somewhere that a user had success using their old DUN adapter as the shared ICS adapter. I don't have that available. In My Network Places, I only have Local Area Connection (Dynamic IP), Local Area Connection 2 (static for LAN), and the WinPOET adapter (DUN adapter?). I've spent 3 late nights f-in around with this, and if anyone can save me a coronary, I'd appreciate it. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

Frustrated,

John K.

Hey John K,
What up man? Hey, don't get frustrated about computers/network...gets nowhere. I've been there.. Anyways getting to the point, realizing that you need PPPoE, I really suggest you get the Linksys 4/port Etherfast Cable/DSL router if you have the cash. I've done quite a bit of research on the router and I'm about 95% satisfied with it. It has PPPoE compatability. I'm not too sure what PPPoE is but it's a protocol right? Anyways umm... does your ISP support sharing internet? If not, then you are going to need one computer as the server...Oh btw I need detailed specs on your network settings and physical connections so I can help you out. Maybe I suck at english but umm...where is the patch cable(cable from the modem) connected to ? Uplink port in hub ? or one computer?

" I have a W2K Prof. box connected to a Westell DSL modem via a Netgear fa311 NIC" I have no idea what you mean by this... Anyways...I'll try to look up some info on PPPoE and help you out more later.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">From microsoft.com:
ICS may not function correctly with some DSL connections if the ISP uses a Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) adapter, because these virtual adapters may not be recognized by ICS. </font>

jkirk420, try an alternate PPPoE implementation, such as RASPPPoE or POETRI (both can be found here (http://www.sympaticousers.org/links/downloads.htm)), or other NAT/proxy software.

I'm not too sure what PPPoE is </font>PPPoE = Point to Point Protocol Over Ehternet. PPPoE is an extension of the PPP protocol used w/dialup. ISP use it to save money on IPs. When the user logs off (times out, restarts, shuts down, etc.), his leased IP gets returned to the pool of available IPs.
