I've set up my own network consisting of 5 computers (server with win2000, 2 with winme and 2 with win98se). I've had all of them connect to the internet at the same time for about 2 months now without any problems.
Just recently, 2 of the computers (both winme) just stopped connecting properly to the internet. I checked the ip's of those 2 computers with ipconfig and discovered that they had both changed into the 169.254.xxx.xxx range for no apparent reason. Maybe this has something to do with the lease? Anyways, I'm trying to get those computers to connect to the cable again.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You must have 3com NICs. I have seen this when the NIC could not pull an IP address form the DHCP server. The cards have an IP hard coded into their ROM to default to if they 10 are not assigned on by windows, or 2) can not pull one from the DHCP server. I would suggest looking at you leas settings on the DHCP server.

jamezman,
I had the exact same problem with W/ME and W2K Pro.
I use ICS on my main Gateway. Just manually put in your settings (IP adress,Default Gateway, etc.) and it should work for you.
I have seen this posted a few times now, interesting.

Cobra25: ICS
@homein hell: The computers are using realtek cards.
Zporttech: I just tried putting in the settings manually but it's not solving the problem.
And just today, one of the computers running win98 se got the same problem.
Thanks for the suggestions but are there any other ideas?

Are you using PPPoE? My Netgear NIC is using an Autoconfiguration address (169.254.x.x) as well, but since it is connected to my modem, the modem actually gets the IP from my ISP. I don't know why but it works...
In the past I've had this cause problems with the 3Com PCMCIA cards we use at work, but after removing and re-installing the card it started to grab IP's again. 3Com has a topic posted on this, it may help.
Hey,
What up? I'm gonna need a detailed analysis of you network so I can figure out what's going on. First of all, is this network for home use? What are your requirements/standards/cost efficiency ? What are your needs for this network besides sharing them ? Are you in the need for speed ? What are the physical connections of this network ? Hub, router, switch ? What kind of DHCP server are you using? Router? WinRoute, etc...?
As someone has said before, 169.254.xxx.xxx is used when the NIC card cannot obtain an ip address from the DHCP server.
I guess the first thing to check are the CABLE connections...whether it be crossover or straight through. (Man I do need a detailed analysis of this network...anyways).
On your computer's NIC card TCP/IP settings, make sure they are on "obtain an IP address automatically".
I just re-read the post and you say you are using ICS. I personally don't like using it, didn't have success with it so I didn't use it. I suggest you download winroute LITE @ www.winroute.com. (http://www.winroute.com.) It is very easy to use and install. If you still insist on using ICS, then make sure you configured it properly. I dunno what settings you used so I can't really help you there.
After re-reading the post again...I guess you can first turn off all your client servers and restart your SERVER. After you server has completely loaded the DHCP Server, turn on all your servers and see if this will solver your problem because the lease will have been renewed. You can also run the "winipcfg" command in run and click on release and renew.
What kind of cable company are you hooked up to?
I hope this will help. If you still need more help or if anyone needs help with networking or something of that sort, e-mail me.
