I will be getting a cable connection in a couple of weeks. I already have two computers networked together. I want to get a router so I can share my connection. We use AOL Instant Messager a lot. Will we be able to use it on either computer with the router(without putting one computer on the DMZ)? If so, can they be connected to AIM simutaneously? I am considering either the Linksys BEFSR41 or the Ugate 3200. Which is best?

Welcome to Speed Guide bozrdang...

From what I've read/heard, I'd have to say that the Ugate is the better choice, however, the Netgear gets a lot of acclaim too. Have you read SG's Ugate 3200 and Linksys reviews (http://www.speedguide.net/reviews/index.shtml)?

Thanks for the welcome. Yah, I've read Speedguide's review on the 3200 and the Linksys. I'm not sure I want to spend that much though. My concern with AIM is with the ports that it needs to use. I've seen some routers where you can only forward 10 ports. Is that enough to still use AIM. Will the Linksys, Ugate, and the Netgear all allow you to use AIM? What's the difference between the Linksys and the Netgear?

You should be able to use AIM from each computer as long as the logon name is different, otherwise the second longon might cancel the first. Check out Netgear's RT314. Once it is setup right it is terrific.
Just follow the instructions and bingo.

Hey bozrdang just a little hint ,Dont know too much 'bout the Ugate or Netgears but I my self have a befsr41/4 port linksys router. and from my experience with it i can tell you to stay away from it as much as possible,I use Msn Messenger not the same but similar to AIM Got 4 computers and not even the one on the DMZ can't file transfer or net to phone, much less the others. You only can forward ten ports range and only one computer can use them at a time,So forget about the linksys,I myself started to look out for a new router because this one although relatively cheap it's has very limited functionality. Only good for broadband sharing and the customer service its very, very, very bad.
Hope It'll help you decide.

I have had no problems with using the BEFSR41 with AIM and with dialpad.com. Netmeeting cannot receive calls behind it, but netmeeting can't receive calls from behind any NAT setup.

With every firmware release they make this box more flexable. With release 1.37, this gateway has three times the capabilities that it had when I bought it with release 1.15. I'm not sure how the other boxes out there have been with updates but linksys far surpasses any capabilities I saw in other low end boxes when I was in the market.

I give the BEFSR41 two thumbs up!
