NETBEUI is used strictly in a Microsoft networks. Its very simple to setup. Not much configuration to be dealt with. By the way this protocol in not routable!

NetBEUI works good w/small LANs. Any system on the LAN will still need TCP/IP, though, as TCP/IP is routable, and NetBEUI is not. If you use NetBEUI, you can unbind File and Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks from TCP/IP, increasing your LAN's security.

Thx for the reply.
So, the netbeui should be used if you combined a lan+internet right? except increasing security can it improves anything?
On a lan only it's no use then?

On a lan only it's no use then?Sorry, I see I wasn't very clear. Generally, NetBEUI is good for any small LAN, regardless of whether or not the LAN has access to the internet. For LANs that do have net access, NetBEUI can increase security by allowing you to unbind File and Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks from TCP/IP.

When you have only TCP/IP installed on a LAN that also uses the internet, you have to have File and Printer Sharing and Client For Microsoft Networks bound to TCP/IP, otherwise, the LAN won't exist. This opens yourself up to hackers. When NetBEUI is installed, TCP/IP will no longer be used as the LAN protocol, so File and Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks can be unbound from it (TCP/IP).
