View Full Version : Netware 5 DSL Help
I have recently set up a 12 station netware network for a relative's accounting firm. Now it's time to do dsl for everyone. I've done some researching and have figured out a lot of my options, but was wondering if anyone in the forum has had experience doing this and would mind giving me some tips?
Particularly, what configuration? - modem into hub, into server, static or dynamic ip's? Any insight into the most trouble-free approach will be appreciated.

You could use the uswest cisco 675 router, configure nat so all of them will share the same IP.
I tend to support using a more central firewall approach, this reduces administrative overhead because instead of updating 20 firewalls you update 1 or 2.
You can either use a Unix or Linux box with 2 NICS and setup ip filter (supports NAT) and setup firewall rules for the network.
You could also buy d-link's router/firewall to put between the switch and dsl router.
The cisco 675 allows you to create a few filters but I would use another product as a firewall.
I would use a switch if possible as it gives better speeds but a hub will work to (with a performance downgrade from a switch).
Just plug the dsl router into the uplink port of the switch/hub.
Yes, I've had some experience setting up dsl for small business lan. I've done it a couple of different ways. Usually using US West dsl and a Cisco 675 dsl modem/router. Probably the easiest way is to make sure that dhcp and nat or both enabled on whatever piece of hardware you happen to be using and then to plug it directly into the hub. Then configure all clients to obtain an ip address automatically. As an extra measure of security you might want to consider installing some sort of personal firewall on the end users pc's. I used zonealarm.
In another scenario where the owner of the business wanted more restictive internet access I simply hooked up the dsl hardware to a dual homed machine (2 nics) and installed winproxy. Winproxy is highly configurable for things like site restriction etc.. I then ran the other nic into the hub and set up all clients to access the internet through a proxy. In this case the proxy server is the dhcp server. Hope this helps http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif
JC & Quickfoot,
I think I"m beginning to get a handle on this issue. Thanks for your help!
Sincerely,
