I just installed a home network behind a Linksys cable/dsl router and the feed is from Roadrunner cable. The first machine on the net is running Windows 98 and all is well. The second machine is running Windows 2000 and has a Linksys FastEther nic. DHCP is working on the W2K machine and I can ping sites on the internet (eg, www.linksys.com). (http://www.linksys.com).) So DNS is working. The problem is that in either IE 5 or Netscape 4.7 I cannot access any outside sites. The connection is always refused. Both the ip address and the dns server addresses are gotten automatically and everything looks ok in ipconfig.
Any ideas why I can't see anything from the browsers? Things do work from the Win98 machine, so I don't think it is a proxy issue with the router firewall. Could this be a security issue.

Under IE:
Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings
Make sure all 3 boxes are NOT checked.

Thanks, but none of them are checked. Netscape does not work either. I see that the friendly name is getting resolved into an ip address, but the connection does not seem to be accepted by the site.

I guess it's a router setting (prolly something simple), but I'm not familiar w/that router b/c I've never used one. All I can suggest is that you double check your router settings and make sure everything is setup correctly for your LAN/net connection. I'm sure someone who owns a Linky will reply and be more helpful than I.

Good luck.

in your setup for connection under ie, try setting your proxy to the ip of the router. port 8080. Im not 100% on that but thats the first thing that comes to mind, have to go home and play with mine to be sure.

Nope that doesn't work either, sorry.

By the way, why would I need a proxy setting for Win2000 when I do not need one for Win98?

I don't have proxy settings in my win2k machine, nor in my win98 machine... I had the problem b4, win98 could connect, win2k can't... but after I clicked the "reset web settings" in win2k, the internet capability came back... also try to go to "network and dialup connections", disable the Lan connection, then reconnect it again... just to make sure the IP is good... hope this works...

Try adding in the DNS IP address to your TCP/IP settings. See if that helps.

In my experience 2K always works better with DNS added in.

Where is the "reset web setings" setting in W2K?

I have two machines running W2K with the same router. Go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings. Make sure you have Checked "Detect Settings Automatically". Reboot. I don't know were these guys are comming from telling you to leave these unchecked?

Oops, make sure the two boxes below "Automatically detect settings" are NOT CHECKED. That should do it.

Is the Win98 machine using dhcp also? Try assigning all values to the win2k machine.

Have you tried using the Internet connection Wizard in W2K. Initially I had the same problem with my wifes laptop but I got it resolved so quickly I forgot how I did it. You have to go to each machine with and configure your router. Usually this means setting everything to automatic.

Btw, I just got a laptop with Win2K and it has the same problems. Same IE settings on both W98 and W2K wut W2K will just not go out to the Internet via the browser. Sigh.

Yes, I did, thanks. There is just something
screwy about Win2K and my setup that I am
just not seeing. Aventail Connect cannot do so, though ping works just fine.

Based on what you are saying I don't believe there is a problem with Windows (the operating system portion of it anyhow), I truly believe it is the Internet Explorer portion of Windows. The fact that you can ping outside of your network tells me Layers 1 through three are fine, which means the problem has to be in Layers 4 through 7 or the application itself.

Are you running firewalls on the machines which will not work?

Nope, only firewall is in router.

Hmmm...could possibly be a winsock2 problem....winsock allows applications such as ie or netscape to access the internet...if you can ping the default gateway and ip addresses as well as domain names...it sounds like it could be!!

Try connecting your w2k machine directly to the router(using all the proper settings, IP addresses ect.). See if you can get it to work without the router and then set it up with the router.

I did it again. I meant directly to the cable/dsl modem.

I had the same problem. The problem is the win2k tcp stack..Ping doesn't use the normal tcp stack, it uses its own. so does nslookup and tracert which should work fine as well. i couldn't get it to work without reformatting. now it works fine.
