NIC resource conflicts

Can anyone please help me in setting up my ISA NIC in and old 486 with no Plug and Play bios. Can a system without PnP bios even take advantage of a Pnp OS?
When running the NIC diagnostic software, it tells me windows is having trouble with assigning the right IRQ (9)but when looking in windows device manager everything is fine and its not even using IRQ 9. who is telling the truth ? Windows or the NIC software, and is there a sequence of events I can go through to fix this. Im running Winodws 98. Upgrading the bios isnt a viable option 4 me as the bios is eprom and not flashrom.

Any help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Cheers in advance

Unfortunately what you see in device manager is where Windows thinks the device is and that may not be accurate. (OK, it usually isn't for add-on non-plug & play components).

First, what model of NIC do you have and do you have the setup software for it (if you don't have it, you may be able to download it from the vendor web site).

Use device manager to see which interrupts are free (double-click on the computer line at the top of the device manager display).

Reboot to DOS. If you have the setup software, run it & set the NIC interrupt to one of the free entries that you noted above.

Power cycle the computer and load Windows normally. Check the NIC entry in device manager. If it didn't change the interrupt for the NIC then manually set it yourself to the new interrupt.

Reboot & hopefully it works.

I recently ran into the same problem and tried everything even talking to Microsoft. If you have an available slot you MUST buy a pci nic card and it will solve your woes. One thing to do is go into the bios and disable the plug n play feature and install the hardware and once into Windows go into device manager and install driver for nic card.
