My school line is much faster then mine at home. (233/231, dslreports)
Unfortunately, the proxy service (BESS) doesn't allow any downloads, or viewing many sites either. Is there any way i can circumvent the system? Maybe setting a new proxy in the browser will work, although i doubt it. I would like to bring in napster installer and put it on the computer to download with. One of my teachers has got it to work, although he wont tell me, and i cant figure out how. Tell me what i need to know, ill give you the ip numbers, etc, whatever you need to help me get around the damn proxy. And just in case you were wondering, no, i dont want to print out porn in the library. THis is not why im doing this. (hee hee)
thanks alot

find a connection wizzard on your comp. Then click on it and you will begin setting a connection. Set up connection through a lan. hit next, and when it prompts you to connect through a proxy server click no. Go through the rest clicking no on stuff liek internet mail accoutn and new stuff, then hit done, and boom.

when our school used IE, i got around bess by disabling the use of proxy servers, but then the dudes found out what was going out, so the switched to netscape navigator as punishment http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/wink.gif

Did you ever stop to think that the teachers accounts probably have a higher access level, which is allowed by their login/password properties?

There is a reason your school has installed a firewall.

#1 to stop you from gaining access to thing that can get them sued.
#2 to stop you from doing things other than school work
#3 to get you used to how coorporite lans work, and what you will see when you actually have a job.

BTW

Every access attempt you make, has the potential of being logged which can bring trouble back your way.

yea my school uses a proxy server/firewall type of deal. i got around it using some program on www.winfiles.com (http://www.winfiles.com) for the life of me i could not find it for you, sorry http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/frown.gif but i was using napster, and scour.. and i thought i was slick by disabling surfwatch... but in the end i got suspended for it, because i wasnt as smart as i thought i was. and your teacher can use napster most likely because he has port 6699 or whatever one he uses for napster enabled by the network admin. and you dont.

Why don't you figure out a way to make $39 and get a faster connection? After all the entire purpose of sending you to school is so that when you leave school you will be able to support yourself. It's a cruel world out their son, just you and the checkbook.

I have two questions:

1.) If you set up the LAN manually and go around the proxy sever will any files reside on the school server?

2.) How would the IT guy find out about all of this?

3.) What sites are not available? If mom goes to some site like Napster this will raise a red flag for sure.

4.) Could mom get fired?

Oops, four questions.

My school has a stupid linux proxy that blocks certain sites. To get by the damn thing and disabling in IE does not work download HTTPort off cnet and run that. Beware thought that it could render the computer useless (it may fry a video card if Fortress Grand is on the machine). Have fun just do not get caught.
