View Full Version : Internet sharing slowdown?

Hi,

I have a small home network setup with 3 computers. The comp connected to the cable modem is using WinRoute to share the connection. It is a P100, 24mb ram running win98. My hub is a 4 port netgear 10/100.

My question is this: when playing unreal tournament from my computer, speed is fine, but if 2 comps are playing UT at the same time, slowing down occurs. I was wondering is there anything i can do about this? Is it the p100 itself? The hub? I think the connection itself should be able to support 2 UT games at once.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hello

When you have a network using the same internet connection you are sharing your bandwith so it's gona slow down, how ever also the fact that the server is a p100 with 24MB of ram could cause a bit of a problem when you network remeber when another computer request the information it's requeating to your server and then your server request to the internet the faster the server the faster this is done, I have a small network of 2 computer and I have a p133 with 80MB of ram and I don't notice much a problem with my bandwith because my computer is all tweaked up it runs as fast as a PII, but anyhow, If I were you I would get some more RAM, Tweak the internet conection on all 3 computers and Tweak your windows 98 so it can run faster and smoother it will seem better but like I said at the beginig and like glc1 said, when you share the conection it slows down, what I sudgest will make it a little better http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif.

I hope it helps

Thanks for your help guys.

I haven't tried the tweaks on this site, I've just downloaded a reg patch though, and will see what difference it makes.

There is a cap of 50KB/s.

The reason i thought that a slowdown wouldn't occur due to bandwidth is that the amount of traffic UT is generating/accepting is well below this cap (typically 2KB/s in and 4 out).

I realise you both just said that a slowdown is unavoidable, but is my reasoning wrong here?

I've also seen comments relating to Linux servers and internet sharing, saying that a p100 is fine, however I realise Windows is a ram-hungry beast, so perhaps more ram is in order.

Thanks again. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

Win98 is just stupid when it comes to handling system resources and Win2k requires a lot just to run it. Eventhough WinME is based on the same 9x kernel as Win98, it is much better at handling system resources, though it's not as efficient as 2k. W/either OS, you shouldn't need more than 64-128 megs of RAM (depending on no. of clients and if it is used as any other kind of server). My server consists of Win2k and ICS and a Celry 600 w/128 megs of RAM and it handles ICS and file sharing wonderfully w/my 2-3 (sometimes my friend brings his box over) clients.
