View Full Version : Win98SE Lan

Both of my machines are using Win98SE with a EtherFast 5-port Auto-Sensing Switch. NetBeui is enabled on both, master IP is 192.168.1.1 and client is 192.168.1.2 . Gateway on client is set to 192.168.1.1

My question is, the client machine, when downloading either from the internet or a file on the master PC, is dog slow, meaning I could cook breakfast, eat it, clean up and maybe have the file finally on the client.

Any help with this would be appreciated.
thanks

are you using a program to share your internet connection such a wingate or internet connection sharing
cause if you aren't there is no reason to have static ip addresses assigned to each computer
also your NIC's might be set to 10mbps instead of 100mbps
there migth be light indicators on our hub to show the speed
check you manual to see what certain lights mean on your lan card and hub
how fast are your processor, hub and lan cards
i need more info on the problem

Perhaps the switch is giving you problems. Try using a crossover cable and directly connecting the two machines. You can then test the file transfer between the two machines. If this works, then my advice would be to use a hub instead of a switch. A 5-port switch seems like overkill for two systems anyways, even with heavy traffic.

I'm having exactly the same problem at the moment. I'm going to try removing the gateway address from the computers. I've already setup the hosts and lmhosts files correctly in the windows directory. So this is next.
I'll post again after testing this.

I am using Sygate 4.0.
I moved my Cat5 wires to port's 2 and 3. The speed has improved between the two machines, but there is still a huge drop off on the Internet download speeds for the client, about a 70% drop. The reason I went with a switch is that I will have 2 more machines to add, but if I cannt get these two working together why bother with another 2.

Internet sharing with Win9x is alwayz gonna slow it down. Get a cable/dsl router or setup a Novell/Linux router with a spare computer. You'll maintain almost 100% connection speed with either option.

I get 3-5mbps down and 1mbps up on any of my machines (server and 2 clients). I also used Sygate for a couple of months on Win98 b4 ultimately switching to ICS.
