I have 2 PCs (soon to be 3) that I need to network and share a cable internet connection. I also want to be able to run a game server inside my network.

It seems like you all have different ideas about which router is best (I've decided a hardware router makes the most sense). On the website they have reviews of about 5 but you don't say which one is the best one. Could someone share their experiences? I was thinking about getting a linksys but then I saw you had several others that seemed to do the same thing, some for less, some for more. What's the best choice?

U just need 2 NICs in the server, ICS (built-in to Win98se, Win2k and WinME) or proxy software, and a hub or switch since u will eventually have 3 systems.

I'd look seriously at the Netgear RT314.

1) has a built in 4 port switch.

2) very fast

3) price is very reasonable.

4) It's a rebadged ZyXel p314.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com has a good review of it.

I wrote the review of the ZyXel P310 (a slightly older model now) we have here and I have NO complaints with the ZyXel product once I got it up and running. Very reliable, never had a problem running any kind of service through it to date (game servers, ftp/web servers, VPN's etc). It can be a little more complicated to set up, but nothing too dangerous. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

If I didn't already have a router in use I'd definately go for the netgear. Same as ZyXel, lower price. (Reason why is that Netgear is owned by Nortel, and is much larger than ZyXel, so they don't have to pay as much for distribution and other things)

Look at the Asante FR3004 series routers!
$30.00 rebate to boot!
Very good support.

Seems like the netgear 4-port is the way to go. Fast, reliable, and though not the best for gaming it looks better than the linksys. It seems like everyone has the linksys but the ppl with netgear are more satisfied =]. I probably won't get one for a little while, but thanks for the tip.
