Quick rundown: 2 pcs, cable, hub...want to share connection
Tried Windows Internet Connection Sharing protocol. Everytime I attempted to install ICS on the "host" cpu the 2 nic TCP/IP entries would *never* have "(home)" and "(shared)" next to them. According to all the docs I have read they have to appear like that to work. Needless to say I could never get it to work. Out of curiosity I d/l'd and installed the trail of Sygate. Outcome? It worked perfectly right from the get go. I don't think I have a hardware or cabling issue.
Anyone here have problems with ICS and conquered them? If you need me to supply more info just ask.
ICS config:
server - 2 NICs (1 for LAN, 1 for modem)
LAN NIC has IP and subnet of 192.168.0.1 and 255.255.255.0 respectively. Modem NIC has specified ISP settings
Install and enable ICS
client(s) - 1 NIC each, setup dynamically
I currently run Win2k & ICS on my server, but I used to run Win98SE/ICS. If my mem servers me correctly, Win98SE doesn't have ICS installed by default. U have to use Add/Remove from the Control Panel to install it. Then u have to run a wizard, from the Start Menu, to configure the server. The wizard puts a file on a floppy to b run on the clients, but I never ran it on any of my clients. I just set them up dynamically. I think this is how it works. It has been a while since I've run/used Win98. Win2k rules http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

'98 also has a additional step if I'm not mistaken where you have to bond a protocol to a NIC card.
You have tried to ping each computer haven't you.

Yes, I have tried to ping the computers. The host machine can connect to the net. The client machine is not picking up an IP from the host. winipcfg will not renew on the client machine. I'm not so worried about it now as I have ordered a second IP address from my cable provider...no sharing software or hardware to mess around with.

What were the results of the ping test?
There is no point in proceeding until this is known.

My original post was made a few days after I gave up on ICS. I can't remember what the results of the pings were. I have since removed the second NIC and ICS so I can't check now. I think I will give it another go when I get a third computer. Thanks for trying to help though.
