View Full Version : Cable Modem On Network Computers
Hi All,
I have set up a home network (2 computers) and now they want to use a cable modem. I got a USB adapter to plug modem in and everything seemed to be okay as far as installation. But I cannot access the internet. The vendor says it's a conflict with NIC & USB adapter but couldn't help me. Anyone know how I can get these to work? 2 computers runing Win98, using 4 port hub.
Thanks,
Linda
Tell us a liitle more about your set-up.
Also, please be open minded to adding in an internal PCI over the USB, in my experience they are more reliable and faster.
And cause many connectivity problems.
Something that may help is "hotswapping" your USB.
All that is ,is taking the cord that runs from your USB into your computer out for ten seconds or so, while it is on, then plugging it back in and re-start your system. And see if you can surf.

Hi Rosco
I have a simple Network - Microsoft - networking 2 computers. 1 computer is downstairs and the other is upstairs. They both are running Win98 & I am using NetBeui as the protocol. I installed TCP/IP protocol for the USB modem.
I didn't add another NIC because the computer is leased and I am not allowed to open it (If I break the seal I break the lease) so another NIC was not an option for me.
As far as unplugging the Cable from the USB port - I did that both while the machine was shut down and while it was running. The problem comes when I try to release the default IP address & renew it. According to the vendor who is distributing the cable modem he said that there is a conflict between the 2 adapters and he was not allowed to help me. So I am pretty sure it's just that, a conflict. I just don't know how to resolve it.
Thanks for your reply.
If this is the case then remove the TCP/IP for the other adpater. Then the only device communicating with the Cable modem would be the USB card.
By the way, what IP address are you recieving? That casues this conflict.
When you release and renew what happens?
Hi Roscoe,
I will try disabling the TCP/IP from the NICand see if that works.
I am getting the default IP address on the USB adapter 169. (can't remember the rest of the numbers). When I try to release the IP address it says it's laready been released. When I try to renew the hour glass sits for a while then an error message is displayed saying there was an error with the DHCP server, and a couple other messages.
A cable modem tech was at the site this morning and did realize that the Teraydon modem was a problem but even with the Motorola modem he can release and get new IP addresses if he uses the NIC but not when he tries using the USB. He tried using another USB port but got the same results as previously. Either the machine crashes or error messages that say there was a problem with the DHCP server, etc.
I noticed too that if I launch Internet Explores a message is displayed at the bottom of the screen that says detecting prxoy settings and I don't know why. Then the error "cannot display this page"is displayed.
That's where I'm at now. The techician suggested I exchange the USB adapter for another to see if maybe that's the problem. Otherwise, he said, it's a conflict with the NIC & USB and I would have to have the Gateway technician come in to fix it since it is a leased machine.
Nothing is ever easy....
Thanks for your post,
Linda
In almost all cases a 169.xx.xx ip address relates to a NIC card problem. The 169.xx address is an auto-configuaration address windows gives itself when no other is present. i.e. the absence of an valid IP.
Therefore, I believe you should try and re-installing your USB with updated drivers, if possible. Do that a couple of times, and if it still does not work then call your ISP and ask for another.
Hi Roscoe,
Thanks for the suggestion. I am taking back the adapter I have and exchanging it for another. If that doesn't work then I will try installing updated drivers. If that doesn't work then I guess I'll have to call Gateway since it's their machine and under warranty and see if they can figure this out.
Thanks for your help. I'll be sure to post the resolution if I get one.
Linda
Hi Roscoe,
Just wanted to let you know that the problem I was having was due to a faulty USB adapter. I exchanged it for a new one and everything was just fine.
Thanks for your suggestions.
