I am trying to network 2 PCs running Win 98 with utp. Everthing is set up correctly but I can only see the 2 PCs in Network Neighbourhood on 1 of them. The other Pc wont let me browse the network. It is never 1 PC but either depending on how I boot up.

I have a crossover adapter and all that and as far as I no all else is set up.

Any help for this frustrated newbie would be appreciated

Make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled on both and make sure u have drives shared on both. Also, put them under the same workgroup. 1 PC should have an IP of 192.168.0.1, the other 192.168.0.2. Both should have a subnet of 255.255.255.0. All other network settings should be left at their defaults.

Why would you want to share both hard drives?
I thought that would open you up to hackers?
Check out this site for the proper bindings. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/securnet.htm#actions

Ah, I just checked that link and it is irrelevant to this scenario. It's for people using multiple IPs that r routable on the net or people w/servers. Besides, I'm asking him to bind file and printer sharing to his LAN NIC, not modem NIC.

I just posted that link so they could make sure they are not opening themselves up to any problems, and they might be able to find some other useful info at that site as well.

Ant_the_mus never mentioned if the 2 systems r on the net or not.
I just assumed they were on the net, since they were able to post that question here. Sorry.

I'm asking him to bind file and printer sharing to his LAN NIC, not modem NIC.
You never mention that before I made my post.

I'm just trying to help also, it seems like I made you upset somehow.

Well, the poster obviously is on a comp w/net access, but is not necessarily using one of the 2 comps in discussion. They could be on another comp. Since the post was only about networking 2 comps together, I just posted the stuff that pertains to creating a 2 comp LAN. Nothing more, nothing less. File and printer sharing should definitely not be binded to a modem's NIC, tho.

Again, I assumed he/she just wanted to network 2 comps so it wasn't necessary for me to tell him/her to only bind this stuff to the LAN NIC. We don't know if one of the 2 systems is housing the net connection. Poster never specified.

If u don't bind file and printer sharing to ur LAN NIC and share the drive(s) that u want accessible on ur LAN, it (they) won't be available to other users. Plus, Ant_the_mus never mentioned if the 2 systems r on the net or not. He just asked for help in creating a 2 comp LAN.
