I have CAT5 wiring throughout my house instead of CAT3 phone wiring. I am planning on setting up a home network (still have to buy a router....any recs? A friend gave me a SMC Hub so I don't need a multiport router) and am wondering if I can use the wiring that is in place for my phone instead of running new wiring. My thought is that s since a fast ethernet network doesn't use all of the wires contained within the CAT5 wiring (doesn't use wires 4,5 and 7,8), I wonder if I can use the same wiring for the phone and cabling if I "splice" out the wires not used for the fast ethernet and use those for the phone. Any ideas?? thanks
