View Full Version : I want to set up FTP with decent bandwidth
I have made the registry changes to optimize bandwidth through TCP/IP. What changes do I still need to make to be able to support that kind of U/L throughput?
I'm running WinNT4 Server (SP6a) with IIS 4 on a P3/450MHz w/256MB RAM.
Any help appreciated. thx

Well, I'm gonna assume that you're on a cable modem, or possibly DSL
(let this be a lesson boys and girls, ALWAYS explain your setup in detail!)
Anywho...your ISP is almost certainly capping your upload speed, but if they're anything like the ones around here, they aren't too bright. There's no cap on the number of conncurrent uploads or anything like that, so if your users are intelligent enough to use some kind of download accelerator, you can get damn fine speeds.
Ahem ... point noted. I am using a cable modem, through shaw@home in Alberta. I run DUMeter as a rule, and have once or twice cracked 900 kB/sec. Sometimes I use Mass Downloader, but I have my MaxConnectionsPerServer pushed to 24 files at a time, and can sometimes sustain 600-700 kB/Sec drawing multiple downloads. Beyond that and my computer starts to complain. For singe files 300-500 kB/sec is more usual, still quite respectable considering that without the TCP/IP tweaks it comes in between 35-60 kB/sec. The other day I pulled a movie down using IE5/FTP, one at a time, and got 700MB in about 35 minutes (One file at a time).
I'd like to be able to sustain that sort of throughput for uploads, too. I've been digging through the documentation for IIS, and have found several sections on registry settings to regulate bandwidth, but expert help would be appreciated. I've never set up an FTP server before.
Cheers.
