View Full Version : Linksys EtherFast Cable And PcAnywhere
I am considering the purchase of the Linksys router, for use with my @home cable connection (static ip). I like the idea od sharing just one IP address. My question is this: I need to use PcAnywhere from my office, Can I use this router and still hit each machine from my office via a static ip?

Simple answer is no. You can access one with the appropriate port mappings but not all.

Wrong answer. You absolutely can access all of your computers on your network through your cable modem. Here is how you do it:
Set up one computer (the one you need to access most frequently) as your "central hub" if you will. That computer will run pcAnywhere host. In the Linksys, you will need to either forward the pcAnywhere port (don't know what it is) to that machine or simply put that machine in the DMZ (brings that computer out from behind the firewall.) So you will pcAnywhere to it first. Then, you will run a pcAnywhere TCP/IP host on the other computers on your network. If you need to get to one of those computers, you get into your central machine, then use it to get to the others. Click "Remote Control" from that machine and let it search for pcAnywhere hosts on your network. You will see a list of your other machines and you can get to any of them that you need to get to.
That is the beauty of pcAnywhere -- it can run as host and client at the same time.
Good luck!
