I am confused

Some people are telling me that I can buy a hub and share by cable modem, so what is the point of a router then? Can i use a hub so that one computer doesn't have to be on all the time. Meaning I can turn my AMD on without having to turn on my Intel on to get to the internet

Yep get a hub buy another IP if you can.
You dont need both comps on, to get on the net

Buy a router with a built in hub or switch. It's more expensive but you can be much more well protected.
